Which 17" monitor?

I want a new flat screen monitor for my PC. 17" is enough for my needs, but although I've read specs etc what I don't know is how much does resolution etc. really matter? I only use as a PC, not for games, and only occasionally use iplayer etc. My old 15" packed up and I was given an old 17" (LG Studioworks E900B) but the resolution on this is not great.

I want decent quality but no pointing paying for a high spec I won't see the benefit of. Would this HANNS be adequate? Or is it worth shelling out a little more for a DELL?

Change your monitor resolution to 1600 X 1200 (an odd size) and that ought to improve the visuals. Note to check the settings the monitor will show its current state normally when you press the "menu" button


HannsG are ok but all budget monitors are not to good, cheap, but not good for spending a while looking at the screen, still its your eye sight.
Dell dont make monitors - rebadged I think. Look at Samsung - Viewsonic- Try this model :- Iiyama Prolite E1908WSV 19" 1680 x 1050. £100+vat
Make sure the video card can go to this resolution or you will be shelling out for a better video card.

19" monitors don't cost much more than 17" ones. See the recent review of Value TFTs from PC Pro magazine.

Remember that nearly all new monitors these days are widescreen, so to get the same height of screen as a normal aspect 17", you need to get a 19" widescreen.

Thanks all for your advice. f1charlie I was aware of this, but as I was used to a 15" the 17" widescreen would have been the same. However, having looked at 19" it seemed worth paying for the 19".

John & totalsolutions - thanks too for your advice. I tracked down the recommended monitor on PC World Business & was all set to buy it until I saw a link to clearance items - ended up with a Samsung SyncMaster 943Nfor £73. It seems to have good ratings so am v happy with it.

Was all set to buy poor quality 17" for over £85, got a 19" for £12 less & woudl never have explored this option if noty for MSE so am really grateful - thanks.
