I think this is the strangest thing I have heard in a long while!
Why the heck should you have to go to the expense of planting shrubs etc (unless you actually wanted them) just to maintain the privacy which is rightfully yours?
What an odd man he is!!!! It's a difficult situation as it's always a good idea to stay on the best possible terms with neighbours but you shouldn't have to think of excuses in order to ask him to remove it!
I would just have a word and say that you find the whole thing a bit odd, please could he remedy!!!!0 -
Just looking at it from the other side for a bit.
I own and am responsible for maintaining the fence. I might want to do this when my neighbour is out, and they are building an extension blocking access to their back garden. They won't want me carrying preservatives/fence treatment products through their house. Wouldn't it be a good idea to put a gate in the fence so I can maintain it, with their permission, without disturbing them or carrying dirty tools through the house.0 -
In which case, you would have asked your neighbours permission to go onto his land before starting the job.Just looking at it from the other side for a bit.

No, you would pass it over the fence. They won't want me carrying preservatives/fence treatment products through their house. Wouldn't it be a good idea to put a gate in the fence so I can maintain it, with their permission, without disturbing them or carrying dirty tools through the house.
I really can't see any need for a gate in an adjoing fence. (Unless your neighbours were family). I also can't see how he thinks it is acceptable to put it in under these circumstances.
I would go was a PP has suggested and get legal advice and a letter from a solicitor.
JenI love giving home made gifts, which one of my children would you like?

You have to bear in mind, nobody does something because they think it is the wrong thing to do. They do it because they think it is the right thing to do. You only see it as the wrong thing to do because you are looking at it from a different view point.
So, to resolve problems, first look at it from your adversary's perspective, show him your perspective and see if you can meet somewhere where you both think is a good idea.
Imagine yourselves on two sides of a metaphorical fence. During discussions with your neighbour, start by going over to his side of the fence, then bring him over to your side of the fence. If you just argue/disagree with him, all that will happen is you both continue to build the metaphorical fence higher and higher.

Imp is right, but it was rude of the neighbour to inculde a gate without asking first.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. i disagree that people dont do something because its wrong, i think some people can be manipulative and calculating, i think some people would test the ground so to speak with a small issue but may have bigger issues planned. especially if this means a gain in money or property.
Im not saying everyone is like this nor am i suggesting this chap is doing this, but it is a strange thing to do and if he thinks its ok to do it hes got a funny take on whats right and whats wrong.
I would sort this soon as,

Tell him for 'insurance purposes' you cant have the gate accessing your land as garden needs to be secure. That way you are letting him down gently and if he doesnt block it it he will have to pay £50 a year towards your insurance now for the access!

I for one would have none of it!0 -
It might be that he intends to annex Poland next and needs the gate to do it. Or just the bottom half of the OP's garden.0

Mrs Imp has just suggested he will water the OP's plants when they are on holiday. :-)0
