!!!!!!{hugs}}}} there is nothing worse than when your child is ill never mind having all 3 ill!!! we have had our fair share of illnesses this year with asthma, chest infections, scarlette fever, colds and LO is teething. i get stressed to the max when one of mine is ill, am worried if i take them to docs that i will be classed as an over anxious mother and there is not much wrong! and if i dont then what will happen?the joys of motherhood

you must be exhausted and that doesnt help your stress levels(been there today lol) steamy bathroom is great for croup and i was also advised warm drinks! hope kids get better soon and you get a good night sleep xxx
What's for you won't go past you
  • Hi Izzy

I don't have kids, but I just wanted to offer a bit of support. I'm sure your daughter is absolutely fine, don't worry. The inhaler is only to open her airways i would have thought, you're not pumping drugs in to her.

You've had a really hard week and kids being ill is so worrying. It's also very draining on you to look after them. Do you have a friend/ family member who can come round, or someone you can chat to on the phone? I think you just need to calm down an little bit and get a bit of strength back.

If you are very concerned about any of your children, don't be scared to call the NHS helpline or your doctor's out of hours number. They may think you're overreacting, but so what if you are?! It's always best to be on the safe side.

You sound like a great Mum! All kids should be so lucky!!

  • Oh, the steamy bathroom suggestion is brilliant! I did know that!!
  • thankyou for your kind words baby is asleep on me im still waiting for nhs to ring back have just eaten som e chocolate and calming down xx
  • Ahhhh poor you glad to hear you calming down and chocolate cake is always a good idea.
I wouldn't think giving inhaler without spacer would overdose at all. The spacer gives same amount just over a longer period of time so easier to breathe it in slowly rather than trying to time breathing right which is why they use them for kids.
I find that when I take too much ventolin that I get a bit shaky but nothing more than that so really don't worry.
Hopefully NHS direct will call back soon.

  • I second the steamy bathroom, DD had croup last year and could barely breath when I took her in there and put the shower on, by the time NHS direct rang me back she was breathing normally and fast asleep on my lap... And also agree that the spacer is used because babies can't be expected to breath in at the right time with an inhaler so the chances of you giving her too much by spraying in her mouth are very minimul...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

Hi there, from my understanding we always use the spacer to make sure that the whole dose is inhaled as with children/elderly the technique can be poor. This means they don't always hhhhhu (breath in sharply) at the right time. The hwooo (breathe out sharply) can just blow out the meds before they get in. You can see it if there is a kind of steam leaking out of their mouths after the puff!

Anyway WRT panicking and being an NNEB- I'm a nurse (RNA) and I would be dialling 999 before I've even got to the kids if DH wasn't there to calm me down! I am the calmest person I know on my ward, very calm in an emergency etc etc but if it's one of my children or my niece/nephew then I'm a mess!
I feel a greater responsibility sometimes because I'm a trained nurse but think that it doesn't really count at home cause I'm barking!
Hope they're all OK now, Kaz.

You won't be the first or last parent to get in a flap over something like this, I know!

Glad all is well now though.

I can vouch for the steamy bathroom for croup too - used to work a treat on DS.
