I'm not a mortgage advisor. I think martin is a victim of his own success... as he has become influential if he suggests even 'informational' advice it will be taken up by alot of 'lazy/silly' people who won't research it themselves.

Its happened before with the icesave fiasco, in that icesave was listed as one of the best banks to put money in, of course martin couldn't know what was going to happen, not many people did but his advice led to 'lazy' people taking it for truth and proceeding.. It was ultimately their fault for believing his presentation (which on tv is very convincing).

As for mortgage brokers, This site is for moneysaving, if what martin has suggested will save people money.. then tough if it means you guys lose your jobs. If it does mean a direct reduction in your business then surely it means it was redudant in the first place?

In capitalism every job, every industry has to compete with the market.... if the market changes and there were just 3 mortgages on offer tomorrow... you wouldn't need brokers at all... Blaming martin again is stupid.

I disagree with martin that he provides information, it may be legally that way but the presentation of it on tv and the internet is very 'drawing'. Some would take that as advice as he is so enthusiatic saying 'fix now fix your gas and elec prices now!!'... then next minute he says the opposite.

Martin provides common sense moneysaving not exactly at the expert level, he uses the info that any of us could get and provides advice from that point. An expert would know the interdependencies of things... like politics, economies and money before simply rating a 6% vs a 6.15%.. in a table.. anyone can do that.

I sincerely hope lots of you Mortgage arrangers are in that position.

    You deserve it.

Comments like the above sicken me

If Martin has a platform to highlight terrible comments received by brokers , then I think its only fair to highlight this type of rubbish also..... most brokers offer a good, value for money service, OK there may have been too many - but thats to fill the demand that the public made ...
    - and many are suffering in the same way thats others in a recession have or will suffer .

Are you also going to say the same to house builders ( thats the guys on site !) , car makers, bank and shop staff .

@Payless. You have to put yourself in the position of an embittered person to realise that what they say is an unconsidered outburst of emotion. Perhaps a pithy phrase popped into their head, like so many journalists. We are only human and often hurt others unintentionally, with our words.

    Heh, JB you are class.

I love your posts - they are about the only reason I even post here at the moment.

    Keep it up :D

I do agree with payless tho - but I managed to refrain from replying to the post in question last night by passing it off as being posted by someone with a single brain cell shared with a cabbage. :D

    Martin...
you are missing the point totally, as a broker I get people ringing me up saying they want a certain type of mortgage because that money saving fellow recommended us to do it. These people think you are qualified to give advice, as you will be aware that to be giving mortgage advice or what can be seen as mortgage advice you have to be regulated by the FSA. I have taken time to write to the FSA about journalists talking about mortgages as I feel that after over 20 years in the industry I want to protect my industry and my client from bad advice. PLease remember Martin please look upto you and some are foolish enough to believe everything you say. 3-5 months ago you were 'advising' people to fixe their mortgage, fix thier gas bills !!!! now you are telling people to 'ditch the fix' ,.
You should have a diclaimer stating that you are NOT qualified to give advice when you appear on the radio /tv.
As Ive posted before Martin if you want to give advice get qualified and get regulated to give advice. Put you money where you mouth is
20 years a mortgage broker. Heaven help the people who see you, you cannot even spell the most basic of English words properly. This says it all about many people who work in your industry and you have just made them look even more un-professional than they are!!

How does the posting of one individual reflect on others?

I guess that makes all doctors muderers as Harold Shipman was a murderer.

  • I don't think you should take comments on the Cherry forum too seriously; it is a forum for brokers only and can be useful for those in the industry. Obviously, I am not condoming any rude and unprofessional comments to yourself and I think on the whole your site is helpful to consumers. Keep recommending us - my clients seem to think I'm worth using!
  • condoming....I meant condoning. :0) Freudian slip!
