What is the difference between a laptop and a netbook?
I am confused by all that is on offer at the moment and could do with some guidance.
Want a back up to my PC, and something to just really surf the net with and to store some photo's and possibly some video footage.
What would be the best for this?

Netbooks are smaller and cheaper. On the other had, full-sized laptops are generally more powerful and have a larger storage capacity. If you want something cheap, really portable and don't mind a small screen, get a netbook. Otherwise get a laptop.0

If it's a netbook that you do purchase: think of the Operating System that you really want

A netbook, in isolation, can perform the tasks you list but for everything other than the most basic things you will find the size of the screen too small.
It's usually better to buy a netbook as an addition to, rather than as a substitute for, a conventional laptop. They're suitable for different purposes.
I love my netbook but if forced to choose between it and my laptop I would plump, unhesitatingly, for my laptop.
You really need to try them out before you buy one.

I find my netbook frustrating and uncomfortable to use for anything more than web browsing, which in it's own right can be a frustrating and uncomfortable experience.
I think the major contributing factor in my discomfort is going from big monitors to something so small, which often means I take preference in my laptop and I keep my HTC Touch Pro for 'on the fly' internet access.
Leopard is right, you really need to go and try them out in a shop to see how you find their reduced size.0 -
At home, my netbook sits just beneath my 30" monitor - which is powered by one of my laptops. It displays my incoming email while I watch Donnie making a fool of himself on the big screen.
Seriously, though, this illustrates the point I was trying to make about how a netbook makes a great complement to a conventional laptop but is no substitute for one. They're good for doing different things. You need to allocate each one to the task best suited to it.
That said, a netbook is quite adequate for pressing Donnie's Idiot Button if you get bored on a train. :rotfl:
