I hope this question is ok.

Im busy filling out an application form for the DWP, it asks nationality, it doesn't give choices but what do i put British or English ? i was born here and have never been abroad (cant afford to :( ).

I ask this question ask i was reading a newspaper on-line last week and somewhere in the country according to one council it isn't acceptable to put on British as it may offend English Irish Scottish Welsh ect.

i hope im not offending asking this

It really does not matter to the DWP, it is your own choice which you put.

You put down whatever you identify yourself as.

Calling yourself 'British' if that's what you choose to do is not going to offend someone who sees themselves as 'Welsh'. It's intended as a fact not an insult! More than likely the article you read was referring to just having a tick box on a form for 'British', without having boxes for 'Welsh', 'Scottish' and '(Northern) Irish'. Some people are particularly sensitive about this, others would simply like the option to identify themselves as being from a particular country within the UK.

Going abroad doesn't change your nationality!

If he (she?) has never been abroad, they probably don't have a passport!

I always put British rather than Welsh as I was born in Germany (and therefore registered with the BRITISH consulate)

FWIW I put that I am English, and if a form only lists British, I will complete the 'Other' box and write English. I don't know why, but I have a feeling it originates from my football affiliations?

OP, if ever you plan to go to Ireland I would recommend doing a bit of reading before you go - Ireland is not a part of GB, and suggesting such a thing would offend many Irish!

You say "...i was born here..." but you haven't said where "here" is! Until you tell us this how can anybody answer you sensibly?

Errr... given that he (she?) asked if they should put 'British' or 'English' down, and later commented that they'd never been abroad I'd hazard a guess that they were born in England. It's just a wild guess though, I might be wrong...
