i am trying to update but i get a red cross and error no. 0x800B001
i cannot find this no. in the help section and i also get message:- website has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to view
does anyone think its a virus thats caused this?

rabialiones - looks like a problem Microsoft are aware of. Try the following steps:-
1. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Softpub.dll, and then click OK two times.
2. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Mssip32.dll, and then click OK two times.
3. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 Initpki.dll, and then click OK two times.
4. Click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 wintrust.dll, and then click OK two times.
Then try running Windows Update again.
Not something I've had to try myself so can't vouch if it'll work.0 -

thanks, it worked, was a bit worried cos at no. 3 funny noises started coming from base unit, checking for updates now, although it said my computer was set up to automatically update.Nice to save.0 -
ohhhhhhhh! just as i was replying went back and saw another error no. with same message. error no. - 0x80244016
altho it is now allowing me to view update history which shows last update on 9th augustNice to save.0 -
Found this...
The error means: "HTTP STATUS BAD REQUEST". How are you accessing the
Internet? Are you using any 3rd party apps that hide your IP address?
Anonymous web surfing program?
Try:
1. Click on Start/Run
2. Type cmd in the open box to get to a DOS prompt
3. Type proxycfg -d at the C prompt and hit enter
4. Type net stop wuauserv at the C prompt and hit enter
5. Type net start wuauserv at the C prompt and hit enter
6. Now try the site again.0 -
