Check your standing orders

Hi
This is a quick word of caution. Way back in August 2001, we cancelled a cable phone contract. Somehow, we didn't cancel the standing order for £30. Now this is the crunch part, we only realised today that we were still paying this monthly.
We phoned the phone company and have to go through a complaints procedure to claim back £30x52 months + interest!!!
It amazes me that the phone company didn't have the honesty to inform us that they were still collecting the cash, but hey, is it worth complaining of Ofcom?
Net result, without realising it, we've saved £1560 + interest.
We are now checking all standing orders and direct debits. To make matters slightly worse, I've been the main financial accountant for the household since this time last year, dutifully checking the statements online and in paper, and I didn't notice anything remiss.
Remember, when it's a joint account, regularly discuss the state of the finances with the other person!!!
Happy new year.
