Rejected from Credit Card again! Help!

Hi.

Ok, just moved to A&L current account and theyve turned down my credit card application as well as HSBC who i applied for a few months ago and I'm struggling to find out why.

Here is my current situation. Im 24 and moved to London 1 year ago and have been living at my new rented place for around 4 months. Pretty sure im on the electoral roll and had lived at my old address for 20 odd years (taking out a few years for uni).

Its about time i got a credit card, i had one before with my graduate account but never used it. I have a good job in the city and no debts on my credit report (that I just received from Experian). I have mobile phone contract on there too with no issues.

Can someone pls give me some ideas of my next step?? Not sure what to do now as I dont want to apply for another card soon as ive read applications bring down your rating. Im about close a Barclays a/c that i dont use and double check my electoral register status.

I want to start building my credit up...and need advice on what to do next as i dont want to get turned down again.

Thanks

your credit report should show whether you are on the electoral roll... are you?

how many searches does your report show for the last 6 months?

best to check with all three credit agencies too

have you asked your bank why they turned you down?
  • Thanks for the reply.

I have had 8 recent searches...however most are related to switching current accounts recently (4 for A&L and 1 for their credit card). 2 are for the actuall credit report and the other is for HSBC.

I am registered on the electoral role but my name doesnt appear to be registered but my address is.

Because you are new to A&L and haven't yet established a credible relationship you could well have been declined. I mean would you lend money to a complete stranger ?

The electoral role issue is highly important factor in assessing credit worthiness, however just because you're not included on it doesn't mean you won't get credit, but you need to clarify either through the CRA's or the local authority whether you are listed or not. Why are you 'pretty sure' ? If you haven't requested to be put on it, then the chances are you won't be.

You could try some of the Sub-Prime cards (starter cards/poor ratings cards) Vanquis, Cap 1, Barclays, Aqua, Monument etc who are all less stringent, but the APR's will be high !
  • Just checked and im definately registered. Not sure where to contact Alliance & Leicester on to check why i was rejected....does anyone have a contact number for such cases?

Lenders do NOT have to give a specific for rejection, they'll probably say it's due to info received from the CRA's or in your case the lack of info through not having a history. You'll probably find most mainstream cards difficult to obtain.
You can appeal against a rejection, by writing/talking to their underwriting dept. though they don't work weekends.
As you already bank with Barclays why haven't you tried them ?

Run your A&L account for 4-5 months and apply again

(By run I mean have your wages paid in, pay bills from it and DEFINITELY DO NOT go over your Overdraft limit)

Best to go in and speak to them, but you will probably have a better chance with one of their sub prime cards
