Who are they? This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !0

police, sorry0

i would assume you have to pay it then claim it back
they are not a vehicle disposal service0 -
claim it back from where?
i wont be claiming on the insurance as the excess is more than the vehicle is worth lol0 -
Then in that case, you pay the recovery and storage fee from your own pocket. If you don't pay it, the garage will take steps to recover it from you through the courts. The bill doesn't go away.0

yeah you still have to pay the recovery charge and the storage, you may as well get the car back after paying and selling it on ebay or the like or repairing it. or you can sign it over to them in some cases for them to scrap it or sell it -
YOU STILL HAVE TO PAY THE BILLSealed pot challenger # 10

Clearly you need to do your sums again then.
Work out what costs/benefits you face if you claim (i.e. you will get nothing but not have to pay anything either, though you may lose NCD); then work out what costs you face if you don't claim (i.e. the storage costs). See which is more economical.0 -
Why should you expect the police (i.e.us through council tax) to pay the storage costs?I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.0

When you reported it stolen.....I'm assuming you did, the police should have asked you, "when it is found and we notify you that it has been found, do you want us to arrange recovery or will you do it?"
I was asked that and I replied "I will do it"
Copper then said, "you will have 24 hours unless it is in a dangerous position."
My car never turned up, it was probably stolen by a scrap yard.
I don't know what yuu can do if the police did not ask you that question, and I don't know what you can do if they did ask the question and you indicated self recovery, they subsequently found the car in a non dangerous/obstructive position and did not notify you.
After that, was done in my case I phoned DVLA to withdraw any interest I held in the vehicle. I did this to try to absolve myself of any fees the police tried to put on me regarding the car. But I'm not suire what effect doing so would have on my liability.
You should also mitigate your losses and inform them you categorically do not want the car and they should dispose of it ASAP.
And you should remember that it is all treated as a debt AFAIK, and debt only last for 6 years, as long as you don't care about a CCJ you can ignore them and never let the bailiffs enter your home, NEVER.
To those here who don't understand the OP's complaint. Why should the OP be responsible for the actions of pond scum? Pondscum put the car where it was found, pondscum should be liable for the costs not the victim.0 -
The vehicle is not held by the Police, it is held by a rota garage and any costs owed are to the garage, The police have a contract with the garage that they will attend remove etc and any costs incurred is between the garage and the vehicle owner. If the owner doesnt pay then it is a civil debt which I would very much doubt would be followed up, the owner would be asked to sign the car over to the garage who would scrap it.
Quite clearly someone has to be responsible for their own property and this is down to the car owner, albeit the car was stolen, but that is what insurance is for. Why should society have to pay to have someones car returned or stored when there is insurance on force.
Clearly if the offender is caught then costs can be awarded against it, but usually it doesnt have enough left over from it's Giro and tax credits for the 15 kids around the estate to pay for fines, so it doesnt pay and the court writes it off, and creature celebrates with another Stella and pops off another kid :rolleyes:0
