hey.
Yesterday I went to look at a Vauxhll Corsa with my girlfriend (who has just passed her test) at Evans Halshaw in Sheffield and found one she very much liked.
Anyways, we spoke to the sales man and sorted out but I was keen to go and look what else there was on the internet just the make sure. Anyway, we were told by the sales man that if we left a £50 deposit it would be ours and if we did go home and change our mind providing we rang up in the morning earlyish (he mention 930) then he would give us back our money.
Anyway, we went home, thought about it a bit more, looked at what else there was and she has decided that she wants to wait a bit more and see how the prices go so I rang up at 915 (15 minutes after they opened) to ask for my money back and he was in a meeting so he rang me back at 945.
Anyway, hes now giving us the run around saying things like its not really a valid reason to get the money back and that they had one person come in this morning to look at it and they had to tell them it was sold and thats what they didnt want to happen and basically not wanting to give me my money back.
I rang up in plenty of time and give them ample chance to put it back on sale and tbh I don't believe they had more customers, I think their just trying to make it look like their losing out (and if they are having this much interest they wont have trouble selling it again)
Any advice?
Cheers,
Tom

Never leave a deposit.
Only thing to do is go in a create a fuss, with luck they will just give it back to get you out the door. Be loud!
Technically I think a deposit is an option to buy and should be non refundable, but he agreed to refund but it will be your word against his.0 -
or send someone else in with a similar dilema and see what answer they get from the salesman?Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0

Did you sign an order form or anything? Deposits are usually refundable. I got out of mine and had it refunded as it turned out there was no service history with the car as advertised. You could check these avenues and try get out of it that way. Otherwise, be grateful it's only £50, we had to threaten trading standards to get back our £200 deposit.DMP Mutual Support Thread Member No 19017/05/08 - Total on DMP: £10025.7007/05/14 - Total on DMP: £1666.20 DFD: July 2017!!Baby Tomos born 5th June 2009 - 6lb 5oz :jWeight Loss Target - to lose 60.8lb by NYE 2015 - 37.6lb TO GO0

you do understand the whole point of a deposit?0

I don't give deposits back if I take a car off sale for someone. I stress to the customer that I'm taking the car off sale and any deposit will be lost of they change their mind.
The whole point of leaving a deposit is someones way of saying "Yes I've done my homework and thats the car I want"0 -
I thought a deposit is non refundable and IMO thats is how it should be0

yes, we all know thats how it shuld be and thats how it normally is but the OP was told on this occasion it would be refunded if he changes his mind.
A big difference - as another poster suggested, go in, make a fuss loudly
good luckmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
When I was car hunting a while ago a lot of businesses tried to get me to leave a deposit, saying it was fully refundable etc, even if I said the car was only a possible but not exactly what I wanted. I never left a deposit as didn't believe them.
I did eventually buy a car over the internet from a Ford dealership. I paid £200 deposit which I had in writing was refundable as I was buying car sight unseen (it wasn't a year old so less risk). I paid the deposit by CC to minimise any danger of them not giving the money back. Thankfully car was perfect when we collected.~Laugh and the world laughs with you, weep and you weep alone.~:)
