just seen on bbc news that a guy in bristol is going to live for free for a year.
he got a caravan from freecycle, and kitted it out with a log burner etc, and is going to live on an organic farm. and going to grow and salvage/forage for food and items.
they did mention a website that is going to show his year.. but i cant find it anywhere.
i am sure they said it was something like.. live free for a year
does anyone have a link to the site ? as i would love to see how he does it.
also didnt realise its world no spend day today

Most people who try and "live for free" end up "stealing" things. Be it removing stuff from skips (which is theft as even if the person is throwing it away, it doesn't mean you can just take it), collecting wood from a forest (that belongs to someone else), etc.
It is impossible to live "for free". Even the woman who lived on a pound a day, that pound didn't include lots of items that were still paid for every day. It is possible to live cheaply.0 -

i can see your point but lets get it into pospective here.. if you skip dive... how can you call that steeling, someone has actually disregarded it, the skip hire and recycling centres are pulling their hair out at mo, as the price of recycable items have plummetted.. at the moment recycling stations have now got to pay to have the cardboard recycled.
certain wooden furniture items can not be recycled, and no one wants the 'old utility' type furniture...
as for collecting wood from woods and forests... in alot of places.. the forestry commission will allow you to take the smaller thinings... etc.. but there are so many broken pallets etc around, and garden/ tree workers who will gladly let you have the trees they fell in peoples gardens
i agree you can not live for free in the modern world, BUT... even if you can gleen some of the ideas from these people and websites... its saving money and the planet.
it was like a few years ago... allotments were overgrown and neglected, and no one would grow veg in their garden as they said it wasnt worth it... and the people who did were looked upon as odd..and were saying wahts the point.... the point was we now look to those people for inspiration and ideas...
which this is what i want to do with this guy...Work to live= not live to work0 -

There was a series on TV a couple of years ago, about living for free, or at least kitting a house out for free. This program claimed it was not against the law to take from skips, or put stuff in in people's skips for that matter.
I would like to know which is right, one way or another.0 -
i think this is a grey area, but the way i look at it... the householder hires the skip, so in effect they still own the items that are in the skip, when the skip hire firm comes to get the skip the contents are then the legal responsibility of the skip owner.. from a transfer of waste point of view...
my business is dealing with a certain type of waste, and this is how it works with my type of waste.
so once the householder has put it in the skip they are throwing it out.. not wanting it anymore..Work to live= not live to work0 -
So he's not going to pay rent on the land that his caravan sits on or for the ground he's going to grow his veggies in?0

if we had a link to the site we could find out all of that..
all i wanted to know if anyone had a link to his site.. not an inquiry... into whats right and wrong about skip diving etc... as i want to read how he is going to do it, and see if there is anything i can use in our own way of life to save money....Work to live= not live to work0 -

You are contradicting yourself and giving the correct answer at the same time !
It still belongs to someone, therefore taking it without the owner's permission is theft. The householder might just be storing it in the skip whilst he is doing something in the house. If he were to put a notice on the skip stating that people could take what they want, that would be OK.0 -

i have never heard of people 'storing' things in a skip before..and yes it is be best to ask before you dive..
but all i asked in the original post was did anyone have a link.. and not about the legality of skip diving... and collecting wood etc..
i have now found a link to a newspaper article.
