Did you all know by the way that you are actually allowed to have a leak?

Whilst I have no reason to doubt you, you are also allowed to pee on an electric fire if you wish, but few would choose to do so ;)

BTW I am so old I can remember this which may be just one reason not to choose to have a leak

Actually it all depends where the leak ocurred.

The Gas Trasnporter for the region is responsible for the mains pipe up until the regulator. (A circular type object just before the meter. ) Your Gas Supplier is responsible for appointing a meter asset manager and is responsible for the regulator flexi piping and meter. You as the owner of the property are reposnsible for your pipe work coming from the meter.
There is a gas enquires tel number but I cant find it to hand, however call 0800 111 999 emergecny number and ask them to clarify exactly where the leak was and why? Ask them for the job ref aswell.

From there you can contact then etiher the tranportor or supplier to ask them about compensation. Most suppliers in the case of the gas transportor being at fault will ask you to ask them directly about compensation.

Although there is no formal compensation procedure, you can state you case and it will be judged on what happened.

Dont bother ringing 0800111999 to enquire about your job. Would you ring 999 to ask what had happened to the shoplifter who was nabbed in Sainsburies last week? No. The 0800 number is an emergency line for the sole purpose of seeking immediate assistance in an emergency situation relating to a known or suspected leakage of burnt or unburnt gas which could be a danger to life and/or property. They will not be able to handle this enquiry. If the OP is sufficiently concerned, then they need to put their concerns in writing and address it to the company who did the meterwork. No doubt they will respond in due course.
