Sounds like your 'friend' possibly forfeited the tenancy by leaving the property unoccupied for a period of time - refer to the TA for details.

Your 'friend' should contact the LL to arrange collection of his/her belongings.

Do you tell your landlord you're off on your hols?

I do if I'm lucky enough to have over a months holiday and a term in my TA states that the property must not be left unoccupied for 30 consecutive days or more.

The 30 days period is often there also because it's a term of most buildings insurance too.

My tenants can go away on their holidays and it doesn't really concern me if I have the rent in the bank. (or if they are going for longer than the insurance specifies)

Why on earth did these tenants move out (obviosly trying to do a moonlight flit) and not take their belongings.

    Something doesn't ring true
  • If your "friends" did not give the landlord written notice, or hand their keys in, then the landlord has acted illegally, and it is an illegal eviction, their first point of call is the police. If they do not want to know, then call a locksmith, and take the landlord to court for the cost.
Be-littling somebody only make's you look a bully.
Any comments I make on here are my opinions, having worked in the lettings industry, and through life.
