Do Barclays Online Bankers Hate Their Pinsentry System?

Hi there,
Well with Barclays online banking you need to use their pinsentry reader to generate a pin to gain access to your account, even just to look at your bank statement, which i find utterly ridiculous. Everyone cannot carry around such a huge calculator and NO i do not wish to click on forgot details everytime just to get quick access.
I am now contemplating closing the account purely based on this reason as I am with Lloyds TSB and Natwest that do not need a card reader to log on, but do need it for advanced banking.
My question is do Barclays account holders think it is a good way of protecting their money?
And are lloyds tsb or natwest thinking about using this system just to log in? Because I dont want to close my barclays account and then find out others are doing this as well.

My pinsentry is slightly smaller than my Blackberry....that said I would find it irritating to carry it around with me. Surely in these days of technology they could make it smaller...or even suppy a key fob version!! (maybe BarclaysManager could send that off to their Brainwaves department....& get a free pen , used to be a free phonecard in the olden days, for the suggestion!! )
That said....I dont take it out as I lose everything!!! just annoy telephone banking...esp when I call their premier line which is still on free phone 0800 number !!!0 -

We (Barclays staff) have the little SecurID key fob things for our laptops. This idea was evaluated for online banking but rejected in favour of PINSentry/Dynamic Passcode Authentication for two main reasons: liability shift (since it requires card and PIN) and the fact APACS has a standard in place for this - so you can use pretty much any card reader, and it allows for the potential of third party readers and solutions etc. I can safely tell you this isn't going to be changed any time soon.
Personally, I prefer the smaller, slimmer readers as used by RBS group and Nationwide. I am friends with a CAM from Nationwide, so I got him to get me one. I'd still prefer a Natwest/RBS/Ulster one, simply because the color scheme is much nicer.
Also, if you have the money and hate PINSentry, go to Premier - the telephone banking is amazing. Or, if you've got enough money and do any dealings in USD or EUR, the Barclays Wealth has no PINSentry, just old style membership number. What would William Shatner do?0 -
The OP who says his PinSentry is enormous is probably like one of those men who imagine they have huge penises but when they actually flop them out they are like 1.5 inches long.0

:T bravo for making a genuine post stray away from the original question, I will not respond to any further comments u make.
As for those who believe its not HUGE, ok maybe I was exaggerating however it is a big thing to carry around, probably easier for ladies as they have handbags but for guys its like an extra phone, I cant imagine all of the guys wishing to carry this around.0 -
NoI like mine, dont need to carry it around with me as I only log on a couple of times a month from home.
Whilst I am concious of viruses and the like, its extra security and that can only be a good thing.0 -
NoRemember that any cardreader will do - I now leave the chunky PinSentry in its box on a shelf and use a NatWest issued cardreader when going to Barclays' website.
If you want a horror story for the (mis)use of cardreaders I would cite Nationwide - where not only do you have to use it when creating a new payee - but you also have use it to verify each single payment you ask for on an existing payee. Curiously the same standard does not apply to recurring payments (Standing Orders) where you can amend one as many times as you like without interference........under construction.... COVID is a [discontinued] scam0 -

Don't carry it around with you then! How many times a day do you need to check your online statement??
I am actually glad that it is so 'difficult' to access my Barclays account details online!0
