what does an xbox do that a ps2 doesnt?

my 7yo son wants an xbox for christmas, its obviously because hes heard someone talking about them, he doesnt know what exactly it does apart from play games. He has a ps2 at my house which he uses only for a few games and hes asked his mum for the xbox from her ,so it would live at her house. Ive told her just to get him another ps2, that way he can use games at both houses, and obviously,a ps2 his alot cheaper so she could buy him other things aswell. so my question is,,what exactly does an xbox do that a ps2 wont and does a 7yo realy need what ever it does for the extra money

xbox 360 I assume you mean ?? if so, it has better graphics, and you can play online (at a cost, of course). Also, a lot depends on what games he wants to play, halo series is the obvious one that was only released for xbox/xbox360

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

sorry yeh,i mean an xbox 360
well he wont be playing online. He has a very short attention span with games. some of the ones i got him,he just gave up or got bored with after 20mins and never bothered again. To me (im 41 so my 1st experiance of tv games was ping,or pong or what ever it ws called)
the graphics on ps2 are great anyway.

The two are worlds apart for games and worlds apart in terms of what it means to him. If hes had a ps2 for a while and gets use out of it, chances are he'd get maybe 3 years out of the 360.

They're down now to £129.99 compared to £84.99 for a PS2 - if its really what he wants and the extra £45 is within budget i would.

Also, check out your local dvd rental store, a lot of them do 360 games to rent for a few £'s.

Also, there are some very good 360 games that are now as low as £9.99 - check out play.com

Finally, the likes of GAME will take trade ins of previous games, so you can trade in previous games when he wants a new one - or my personal favourite - sell them on ebay.

You can also download free demo's of games - a sort of "try before you buy" - but you will need a subscription to do so (although £30 a year isn't the most unreasonable price to pay).

Even though I've got a 360 myself, you might consider a PS3 also. Granted it's more expensive, but its got a built in blu-ray dvd player, and it's compatible with virtually all PS2 games.

Not correct, only the 60gb (not produced anymore) is compatible with PS2 games but i agree it's worth considering, amazing piece of kit........
What if the Hokey Pokey really is what it's all about !!!

£299 for a ps3 as opposed to £129 for a 360. Having owned both, its in no way worth 2.5 times extra for a ps3.

Plus as has been pointed out, the backwards compatability has been removed with machines made in the last year odd
  • The 360 is a great peice of kit. Far better that a PS2.

The main benifit is the online part, thats where gaming is heading.
So much more functinality, MSN messemger, movie downloads, game downloads etc etc. The full membership can be had for about £25 a year which is quite reasonable,.

Personally i'm on 'Silver' which is free - That still allows me to download demo games for free. I've almost filled the 60GB HD with just demos, got about 70 games like that, granted, not full games but enough for a quick gaming session.

My 7yr old likes using it but the Nintendo Wii is supposedly the better machine for younger gamers and family gaming.

Stock up on PS2 games. Unless you have a modernish/HD TV, and deep pockets for the expensive current-generation games for the 360 or PS3, you're better off sticking with the last-generation ones. The PS2 has an unrivaled back catalogue of games that are now available for next-to-nothing. Perfect if your little one tends to run through games quickly or has a short attention span.
    Super geek.

you only need to have the silver subscription to download and play the demos of arcade games, the silver costs nothing, it depends how much use the OP's son would get out of it

I wasn't aware of the changes to backward compatability - Sony are gonna disappoint a lot of people with that move.

I hear you on the price difference, but the £129 Xbox is the crappy Arcade version with no hard drive, and a wired controller. For a decent Xbox, you're looking at at least £160. The price difference comes from the built in-blu ray.

It's all about what you want from your console really
