You could try free alternatives such as OpenOffice which gives you 98% of the features Office provides, but is free. Being a different piece of software though you'd have to get used to the changes and ensure you save in the correct format (It offers all the Microsoft formats plus others).

i'll tell you how bad it is....i always thought works and office were the same thing:confused: . so, if i get this open office, (i'm sure there will be more than enough feature for me:o ) will it give me the option to save the docs in a format that is openable and viewable to someone with office? and is that format still called .wps for word processor docs and .xls for spreadsheets?
i don't want to dig a hole for myself, only limited computer knowledge you see:o .

thanks for your replys so far.

Avoid using works filetypes. You should be saving as .doc (Word document) not .wps where possible as that's what most people can open without a lot of hassle. xls is Excel's filetype so not sure how you're already saving as that and not .wks for your spreadsheets. But .xls for spreadsheets is the right thing. Personally I try and use the Office 2007 filetypes as much as possible .docx and .xlsx but that's because I'm the only one that needs to open them usually.

If you open the document in your version of Works and then select "Save As", there should be a drop down box giving you the option to save the document in another format. If you save it as a ".doc" then your friend should be able to open it. Apologies if this doesn't work - I don't have Works installed on my current computer so I'm suggesting this from memory.

if i do this, the file stays exactly the same but a word pad file is created in the same folder that windows cannot open:confused::confused:

Most people will be able to open it but you need to install some proper office software yourself, such as OpenOffice that's already been suggested.
