Natwest bank charges

Options
I have been charged £58 for being over my overdraft by £26 for one day. It was 2 cheques to the school that they had hung onto for a while.
I have been into my local branch and written to head office and they refuse to refund the charges, even though this is the first time this has happened. What else can i do?

Nothing really. I have had charges refunded in the past as a 'one off' but if you have already asked and they have refused, there is nothing you can do.

I know it is easier said than done but you really should have noticed that the cheques hadn't been debited and made sure the funds were still there to cover them.

I know it's annoying and my children's schools tend to have a habit of hanging on to cheques.

I must admit whenever I write out a cheque I mentally deduct it straightaway from my available balance. Maybe put a sticky note on your computer so that whenever you log in to natwest you remeber to knock that off the available bal.

None of this advice helps you at the mo though.

I have found that it completely depends on who you get through to when you call lending about a charge reversal. Did you go into a branch or did you call them on Actionline? Maybe writing them a letter and explaining how tight this will leave you. A year or so ago I had lots of charges one week and it literally meant I had no money for food (and importantly they could tell that was the case because I was on benefits). Worth a try if you will face severe hardship.

I know someone who works for Natwest and they casually told me that they'll usually refund the first charge you incur as a 'gesture of goodwill'. They mark it as such on the system. They don't advertise the fact of course, but it's generally the done thing.

If it's the first time maybe you try asking them for a gesture of goodwill as you have never incurred charges before?
