Well I know our smoke alarm works - it goes off most weekends when I make scrambled eggs (no windows in our kitchen is my excuse!)
Our CO detector started beeping every minute on Monday - the people who lived in our place had put it in - I called the helpline (it's a British Gas model) and they said that they will replace it for free. (If it beeps constantly, that's a CO warning. if it beeps every minute, then there's a problem with the machine.)
Yes, they do have an expiry date.

We always take one away with us as well as having one at home. However, we test like many other people, but did not realise that it is only the battery we are testing. Not sure how long we have had ours, probably about 3-4 years, but now wonder how old it was when we bought it.
