Blue Screens!

Hi

I've been getting some of these dreaded screens recently - have fixed them so far with "turn it off and turn it back on again" fix. But the other night my dh was getting rather cheesed off with it (to say the least - the air matched the colour of the screen shall we say;) ).

I'm running a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with windows XP

I've now got a bit of time so I'm trying to see where the problem is and how to fix it but I may need some help please?:o
  1. As I'm doing this I'm backing everything onto my external hard drive.
  2. I then intend to run Super Anti Spyware; Ad aware; CC Cleaner and then Spybot.
  3. Have looked in event viewer on my computer and have found the following errors:
W32Time
System Error
Service Control Manager - Loads of these
disk
disk
Windows update agent
PSched
Server
PSched

Some of them are repeated more than once. Not sure what to do or where to go now. I haven't installed any new hardware recently however I was having a problem with my wireless router (Netgear DG834) and so my network name has changed (somehow - I didn't consciously do it!)

Do I need to run a microsoft debugging tool? I did a google search for blue screen fixes and came up with a couple of sites with free downloads to apparantly fix these? Scared to do this 'cos I'm not sure what I'm downloading.

If you need any more info - please ask but in lay man's terms please 'cos I ain't techie in the slightest!

TIA

  • when you get a blue screen there is an error number, and possibly a filename, report that to us
Utinam logica falsa tuam philosophiam totam suffodiant.
  • If its a year or more since you reinstalled then continue backing up then apply the set-up CD to install a fresh copy of windows, its the only way and save you time. You would spend all day "fixing" and still be in the same state tomorrow.
  • Thanks Tony - yes there were error messages but I couldn't tell you what they were now. Next time I'll either write it down or take a photo.

Hi totalsolutions - not sure what you're referring to in the reinstall. Do you mean the wireless router? I only did that on Sunday this week? Does that help?

  • If you can get onto the computer, then you can email me the .dmp files from C:\Windows\Minidump and I'll have a look at exactly what is causing them. PM me for my email address if you want to do that.

    Er, sadly no.

You can get a copy of the error message from the event logs.

Quickest way to get these would be to go to Start -> Right click My Computer -> Manage -> Event Viewer -> System Logs -> then look for the exact time and date.

Double click the alert and click on the buttom below the down arrow (copies the message into memory), then paste it back on here...
  • Hi

thanks for the comments. I will do that next time it happens because I can't remember exactly when it was.
