  • yep and he passed out the word 'quiz' written on cards, not as grafitti on walls. Obviously the story has changed a little in the telling. :)

In that case I'm sorry. What does a wedding photographer have to do with anything and why post his name 3 times?

    G,

I thought you would be living the sweet life by now, with no time for us whinging poms?????
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

I've not got any work yet and I'm a bit stuck out in the suburbs right now so need something to do before Mrs Generali and the Generalissimos wake up. I doubt I'll stop posting altogether anyway, just post a lot less.

We're off to the beach today and tomorrow. I think we're going to get more thunderstorms later but tomorrow looks perfect - 28C and a clear blue sky.

I went to the fish market yesterday: very MSE. They were selling some fantastic fish fresh off the boat for under $10/kg (that's about GBP2/lb). Mussels were about 80p/lb!

It's a nice story, but probably apocryphal - the word is documented as far back as the 1770s meaning "an odd person", and the story about Richard Daly isn't found until the 1830s.

I used to rather like you Generali! Please don't keep rubbing our noses in it: I am far too old to be allowed to emigrate :o

    bit of subliminal advertising.
I would ask if you're proposing to me, with the wedding pics ... but this is the first time I've spotted it, whereas Generali spotted it three times.

Are you subliminally proposing to Generali and begging him to come back to the UK to be with you?

Or do I just not get the cryptic clues?

Did you know that the word "Quiz" came into being due to a bet between 2 blokes. One bet the other that he could get a word into the Oxford English disctionary, so he got a load of people to write "Quiz" on walls (I think in London) and it entered the English language.

Did you know it's a Dead Granny story?

There is a well-known but untrue story of the word "quiz", which says that in 1791 a Dublin theater owner named James Daly made a bet that he could introduce a word into the language within twenty-four hours. He then went out and hired a group of street urchins to write the word "quiz", which was a nonsense word, on walls around the city of Dublin. Within a day, the word was common currency and had acquired a meaning (since no one knew what it meant, everyone thought it was some sort of test) and Daly had some extra cash in his pocket. However, there is no evidence to support the story, and the term was already in use before the alleged bet in 1791.
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

I suggest you try either Coopers sparkling ale (5.8%) or Coopers pale ale (4.5%).
Both outstanding bottle conditioned beers, so will have small amount of sediment in.

The pale is also availble on draught.

Better than most beer in the UK.
