Breathable felt/gutter question

I have some bright green breathable felt on my roof which has been left long. Guttering has now been fitted. How far back do you cut the felt? The guy whos been helping says cut it so it dangles into the gutter. Is this right? I can't say i have seen a green stripe round other peoples houses. Don't want this to look odd, but more importantly want this to be water tight.

  • The felt is there to stop water running down the barge boards (or is it soffit or fascia board??s). Letting it dangle into the gutter is the right thing to do.

I have the same situation although mines bright blue. I've cut it so it "just goes into the gutter" as I read if it can sit in the gutter where rain water may stand it can go mouldy etc... It definately looks worse from a ladder, but like you say no-one else seems to have these brightly coloured strips jsut above the guttering. I though I was missing something, but maybe not?

I have a small extension that has this and it just over hangs into gutter to allow water to run into rather than into the barge boards
  • remember that this system is still newish, in te old days it was felt (Black) so it was hidded to a degree.
  • Breathable felts are subject to solar attack over a few years UV light can cause them to degrade.. generally all felts are dressed into the gutter so that any precipitation that passes under the tiles or slates will run where it is meant to be.. into the storm water system. What the BBA certificates of all breathable felts will say is an eaves carrier tray is required. This is essentially a piece of normal felt or plastic that dresses beneath the felt at the eaves and into the gutter so is generally beneath the cloaking (bottom) slate or tile and is in addition to the breathable felt and is just tucked under to provide a second felt as it were at eaves. There are many different colour felts some are white like Tyvek others are black like nilvent and others are green, I like nilvent due to the colour and the possibility to have insulation to within 25mm of the felt in a drooping situation!

    Hope this helps

Thanks Matt, just looked on my breathable felt website and it says EAVES PROTECTION STRIPS Bituminous strips which protect at eaves level underneath pitched roof membranes. If i had seen this earlier i would have got some. Taken everybody elses advice now and its now dangling inside gutter. Did think i was missing something, hope this outlasts me. Will check on it next year when i am cleaning out the gutters.
