What should I do?

A work colleague gave me the contact details of a builder that did superb work for a very reasonable price so obviously I contacted him to arrange a date to come around to look at the work to be done - which is considerable! Anyway he didn't turn up, or ring to say he wasn't going to. Now I'm in a quandry because I'm desperate to get some of the work done, especially the leaky flat roof! Should I contact him again, or is he just hinting that he doesn't want the work? He is a foreign builder if that makes any difference.

Also how much would it cost to repair part of a flat roof on a double storeyed house - I have all the repair materials.

Thanks

  • just call him again and text to see when he can come round again. If after that you dont get a message, try another builder!

Being foreign doesn't make any difference, just call someone else. In fact, you should get a minimum of 3 quotes for any job.
  • I personally have never had any experience of 'builders' whatsoever, all I meant by referring to 'foreign builder' was that English builders have a terrible reputation for not turning up and going off on other jobs (according to friends and family who have had experience) so I guess I expected the opposite however stereotypical that sounds.

We've had this happen to us. A friend recomended someone, he did actually come round eventually to give us an estimate, after cancelling one visit, we had to chase him up, he gave us a better price than the first estimate we had, the oh rang him and asked him if he would actually do the work, he said yes, he would get back to us, didnt, we chased him up, he then said he was on jury service, would contact us,and 5 weeks later we're still waiting. We have since got someone else who has actually did work for us in the past, who we had forgotten about :embarasse and the work has started. I have a feeling though, judging by whats happening in the area we live, there seems to be a lot of people getting work done on there homes, rather than moving, so builders seem to be very busy at the moment. Well thats just my humble opinion anyway.

I was hoping the opposite was the case - oh well - might end up on the roof myself at this rate! Now I know why I've always been reticent to employ builders - bl88dy waste of time!!

Thats what !!!!es me off about tradesmen, when they either done turn up or give a rediculous quote just because they dont want the job. If they dont want it, just say so and stop wasting everyone's time.
  • Go elsewhere unless your friend was really impressed, they would be probably better placed to advise.

We've asked tradesmen to come round to quote or look at small jobs, hardly any ever turn up or give false promises. Say you want a big job doing they don't leave you alone and badger you for an answer all the time.

This obviously doesn't apply to everyone, but it's funny how we keep finding all the bad ones.
  • Well I guess I'll just have to wait until they don't have any work and then they'll have to dance to my tune - good ole supply and demand!
