I have been looking into taking out the new "Pay as you drive" car insurance from norwich union. I have looked through the forums on here and i can not find anyone who has has experience with them. I know they are new but i need help!!!

If anyone has had experience with this kind of insurance please give me some feedback!!!

  • I would also be interested in anyone who has experience of it.

I think that it's not just your mileage that counts, but the time of day that you drive and they type of road and area you are driving on.

Here is a link to a Guardian article of 2004 when the scheme was launched

It was only due to go "national" in 2006 and they were trialling it with just 5,000 motorists until this year, so we'll be lucky to get feedback!
  • I have just rang and got a quote on my 98 Proton compact. The best fully comp that i had before was £1350 a year. Now the best i have is £1200 a year which is around £100 a month saving £15 ish a month.

Got another quote for a 04 Punto which comes out as £80 a month which beats the rest by £35 a month. This comes with free box and first 100 off peak miles (6am - 11 pm) free a month. I think that this is a done deal

I'm on the trial pay as you drive insurance. Got tracker fitted to the car nearly 2 years ago, only down side I can see is I have to keep the car for 3 years and I want to change. Its with Norwich Union, the premiums (I think) were either frozen for the 3 year trial or maybe reduced, I'll check tomorrow. They offered it to put me on the trial as I rang NU to haggle more of my exsisting insurance, they premiums had gone stoopidly up. So I said I had an ace offer from Tesco and were they prepared to match it. No, they bettered it. Free tracker & lower insurance. I'm happy with it, its been no bother, I got a full print out of my movemennts last year driving, what a sad life I lead as I wasn't out after 12pm more than half a doz times.
If you want any more details let me know.

I been interested in this for a while now, ever since I heard about it 2 years ago. I am all for svaing particular as a careful driver who doenst do much driving at all, why should I pay for idiots who speed or drive recklessly. I wish DVLA would scrap road tax too, I resent paying that when I hardly use my car

Unfortunately poppycat, some of us don't resent it.

A pay as you drive scheme would put me out of my job, and many other people.

Well I am sorry if that would do you out of a job Sean, I am out of a job also. But I am subsidising those who use there vehicles a lot. Its not just about saving money, its about time we all took responsibility about the way we use a cars, I realise that may be a simplistic approach and there are lots that should be done before we have a charging scheme based on usage.

However, we are using the Earth resources at a incredible rate, we all MUST take responsibility for that, and when we realise that taking the car to the shop just 1 mile down the road will cost us X amount of insurance/road tax some of us particularly those in disadvantage communities will think twice. Its a bloody shame that the affluent may just think, great less cars more room for me attitude and so drive my Chelsea tractor.

The days of road charging and insurance charging will come, and the sooner we realise that, and modify our driving habits on this crowded Island the better.

Congestion is already damaging this countries ecomony and making us uncompetitive, we are so far the only country to consider road charging, but other countries are watching. With the advent of the latest satelitte technology using a different GPS system (name escapes me for time being) I am led to beleive it will be far more accurate than the Amercian GPS system it will only be a matter of time before we will ultimately have a charging scheme, hopefully based on usage but also times of days and roads, however I reconize there are problems that need sorting out.

    Mmm
i live on an island with 4 miles of road,so i dont go far! also No chance of theft ( boat only comes twice a week) so i resent the "theft" bit on the insurance, but my premiums don't allow for this.
