Take it back quick to see if they can help. Home insurance? Ebay for a replacement screen. Looks like he's getting a new pc from Santa then.
Remove the hard drive and connect to a desktop PC to remove the data.0 -

You can get a 15.4" widecreen on Ebay for £60-£80. If, as suggested, you were to go the home insurance route your excess is probably about that.0 -

Just an idea, but if you have a LCD TV at home, some of them have a VGA connector on them so you can plug your laptop into back of LCD TV and carry on as is. Think you need to do Fn button with one of the F keys until it displays.0

If you claim on your home insurance as 'accidental damage' (laptop got dropped), then they will (normally) pay-out for a complete new unit (if you have 'new for old' cover), I know someone who got a replacement laptop this way (he genuinely did drop it and break the screen).
They didn't want the old laptop, so he now has one to sell for spares.
If the insurance company won't do this, then try looking at complete laptops for 'spare or repair' on Ebay, these work-out cheaper than just the screen as you then have the remains to re-sell to off-set the cost. I bought a dropped Acer purely for the screen plastics & 1 hinge to fix a friends daughters one, I paid £45 for the complete laptop, then sold the bottom plastics c/w mainboard, keyboard & touchpad for £38, so in effect, I only paid £7 for the bits I needed instead of the £25 someone wanted just for the plastics.Never Knowingly Understood.

www.screentekinc.com is a USA based company selling laptop LCD screens, contact them and see how much shipping will be.
There are also links on the home page to Computer Shopper and BestStuff.com explaining how to replace screen.0
