I wish my family would agree to no presents really, but we've discussed it in the past and most want to carry on buying, hence my need to get creative!
It's quite hard too when your family keeps increasing every year, ie extra neices and grandchildren!
Sorry about your husbands job, my DH is self employed in construction industry, not a good place to be at the moment.
Anyway good wishes.DMP Support Thread Member 238DMP started October 20080 -
Yes, my husband is in the construction industry. Just hoping things will improve. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

I'll be totally honest I cannot imagine having a xmas with no decorations and stuff. But my hat goes off to you, if you can't afford your mortgage which is alot more important that one day then good on your for going for it. I agree with the others that it'll probably be one of your better xmas's. It will be a lovely time for you and your husband coz it will show you both whats really important ...and presents isn't one of those things!
There's people all over the world that don't have a 'proper' xmas day, at least you two will have each other and your family are all happy. Think how much better the christmas's will be once you are able to afford it again!Initial Debt July 2020 - £6,772.80

Yeah you're right. This Christmas is suddenly the easiest one we've ever had. Our kids are grown and understand. My daughter suggested it because she has just started a job and doesn't want to spend money and I was relieved because I was wondering how I was going to break it to them.
I think a lot of people will be in the same situation , as you are , and I hope they read this thread .
Christmas isnt about buying the most expensive presents ,or any at all , but the hype , and the advertising dont help
I do feel for parents with young children , the pressures really on them to spend money they cant afford me included, But Im not willing to get into debit , and my children luckily understand0 -

We got through the last recession, though things were tight. It wasnt anything like it is now. When the kids were small I got a Christmas job at Woolworths (of all places) which paid for their presents. I'm glad they are not small now and I dont have to worry about buying them toys. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
