Is Anyone Else Going to have a No Presents Christmas?

Because my husband has just lost his job and our priority is the mortgage and all the bills, we have agreed as a family not to buy any presents at all. Neither will we have decorations, a tree or anything else. We will have a Christmas dinner but that's all. It seems ridiculous to me to spend money that we have not got just because of a winter festival.
I think that we can still have a good time.
So excuse me for being Scrooge, but does anyone else feel this way?

Not having a no presents christmas, but having a very creative cheap christmas, ie home made pressies etc.
I love christmas and still want to join in even given my (extremely) limited budget.
Plus, my sister has won some money on a lottery type thing and is paying for xmas dinner for us, so even better.DMP Support Thread Member 238DMP started October 20080 -
I don't have the money for next month's mortgage yet and so any surplus money by December 25th will be put towards next month's bills. Therefore, I cannot spare money for even homemade presents. Even Christmas dinner is pushing it a bit and will have to do it on the cheap. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Tess sorry about your husbands job , but this year will be the best ,because you dont have to cave in to the whole commercialism, stress, and debit, that so many people feel they " have to " to have a good time..Good for you0 -
Sorry if that came across badly, I sympathise with you.DMP Support Thread Member 238DMP started October 20080

Yeah you're right. This Christmas is suddenly the easiest one we've ever had. Our kids are grown and understand. My daughter suggested it because she has just started a job and doesn't want to spend money and I was relieved because I was wondering how I was going to break it to them. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

No, it didnt come across badly and I didnt mean any criticism of you. I'm glad for everyone who can manage to enjoy themselves. Life is very short butI really don't think I can spare any money this year. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

And would also like to add that it's a good start to NOT get caught up in the commercialism ever again!
No presents for us either, as neither of us want anything. We'll buy our son a flight later in the year as that's what he wants.
Hope your situation improves soon and have a good Christmas anyway.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -

:T :T A really great post that says what so many people want to say.
Enjoy your Christmas dinner and all the (free) Christmas entertainment on the telly but, most of all, keep focused on the future.
Christmas shouldn't be about consumption but about togetherness0 -

You're right. I don't think after this we will ever go back to the way we were, even if we become prosperous. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0 -

Strangely enough I am looking forward to Christmas. The tv and dinner and all the rest of it. Maybe our family will still want to see us :rolleyes:The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
