Q about NTL IP addresses

I run a chat forum and recently had a few strange events, mainly one member sending me PMs about my family. Then another member joined and I noticed they had the same IP address. Also, when one member logged off the other would log on, which was odd as the time in the UK was around 2am and it seemed more than a coincidence that this would happen.

My question is, does anyone know if NTL uses static IP addresses? Or is it possible that these are in fact two separate individuals?

Thanks

I'm with NTL and I'm pretty sure the IPs are static. I used to admin another forum and when I checked who was online and where, DH and I always showed up as the same IP address.

The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

    Thanks Jules, much appreciated :)

I was having concerns as to whether I'd done the right thing by blocking the IP but seemed very odd....

I don't believe NTL do static addresses but use DHCP and have a reservation time for the IP. If you leave your modem/router off long enough for the DHCP lease to run out then your ip may change.

Most NTL users go through NTL's proxys (to speed up browsing) so make sure you dont block them or you can say bye bye to your NTL users.

Just backing this up. Most NTL users are proxied transparently on port 80 (used for web browsing), so if you block any proxy IP addresses you can say bye-bye to anyone in the relevant geographical area...

Same happens with Blueyonder (and TBH, most ISPs these days).

    Much like AOL I guess.

You can't block them, or you block everyone! (Well by IP address anyway!)

But PM's about your family?!?!? W00t?! Perhaps it's just someone trying a prank on you....... Or maybe not :|
