Orange accidently checked my credit file 4 times!

Now it has taken about a third off my credit score! It was 897, now it is down to 634.

I applied to get a mobile phone contract a month ago, got accepted, and thought no more of it, then I applied for my first proper bank account with First Direct. Put the application in the post and then thought I should've checked my credit score first, so I did, and it said that I had had too many recent searches, so I had lost points.

When i saw what had happened, I rang Orange, who tried to deny it was their problem. After much arguing they said to send them an email with proof that they had checked it 4 times and they would remove the other 3. I did this, but now I'm really concerned that I'm going to get turned down by First Direct because if it, which will then make my score even worse!

Is there anything I can do about this? Can I put my application on hold until this is sorted? Can they take them off my report? If thye can how long should this take? Isn't it illegal for them to check my file without my permission?

Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place. Please help

First they came for the crack users; but I said nothing. I was not a crack user. Then they came for the heroin users. But I said nothing - I was not a heroin user. Then they came for me. There was no one left to speak for me. (after Pastor Niemoller)

i can answer your 3rd question yes they can remove the searches from your file.
  • The credit score you get from the CRA is not the same credit score the lender actually uses. The lender also takes into account your income, length of residency etc etc. The CRAs don't factor any of that stuff in.

I used Experian, I paid to get my actual score not just the report part of it.

Thank goodness they can remove them, does anyone know how long this would take?

If you are a Experian customer then, you can contact with them, they will then contact with Orange and in the meantime they will keep a note on your credit file.
but, i don't know if Experian helps non member or not.
