Free HSBC McAfee Download & Uninstalling NORTON INTERNET SECURITY!!!

Hi

I have just spent the entire evening so far trying to completely remove Norton Internet Security from my computer so I can install the free mcAfee download from the HSBC website.

However when I try to download it it keeps coming up with download error 12029.

I have followed some advice from various people like deleting all the norton files in the registry and also pinging the connection and i got a reply from this.

Has anyone else had any trouble like this or can shed some light on it.

Thanks

Sammie

You should use the norton removal tool available from their site. But using McAfee is like jumping from the frying pan into the fire. I have been able to get it free legally for ten years and I wouldn't want it anywhere near my pc. I've seen firsthand its' inability to detect viruses (not to mention various compatibility and disruptive issues).

I would agree about the comments regarding McAfee - Also, when I tried it, removing it is harder than removing Norton - at least Symantec offer a tool - McAfee don't

There are better and free Security packages - browse the forums to find them

I have already used the Norton Removal tooland it didnt work. it only uninstalls the program. it doesnt remove the files from the computer. thats why i went in o the registry and manually deleted them.

What other security software do u recommend, free if possible?

Firstly, your thread suggests you still have a problem removing it - if thats the case, reinstall it then remove it with the tool. The most popular free security seems to be AVG. I am not a fan myself - I have actually gone back to Norton as they have fixed the resource issue with the 2009 version and the additional features such as password manager and email protection are great. it is surprising a lot of die hard 'hate norton' pros.

Sammie - read this thread for a discussion on which AV's are considered good.

    Mcafee is awful

I would REALLY suggest against using it

Like scraper, ive seen LOADS of problems first hand (Resource hog, compatability problems, letting nasties through etc)
