Antivirus software for Windows 98

Hello

My dad has a PC which still has the Windows 98 operating system.

Could anyone please recommend any reliable free antivirus software which can still be used with Windows 98?

Many thanks.

Avast still shows 95/98/Me under the "system requirements", though I don't have a Win 98 machine to test it on.

However, it's really not a good idea, because Microsoft don't support 98 any more. Any security failures that might have been found since MS ended support can't be patched, and they never will be.

Having said that, the focus of most malware writers will probably have moved away from 95/98/Me years ago...

Use avast, a router, and firefox2, and you will be fine

If he's anything like my Dad, I wouldn't be so sure. I watched him the other day, clicking the "allow" button on the ZoneAlarm firewall warning popup. He had no idea what it was there for, despite several sessions with me explaining it. Mind you that probably says more about my teaching skills than anything else...

Don't use Windows 98, problem solved.
Since when has the world of computer software design been about what people want? This is a simple question of evolution. The day is quickly coming when every knee will bow down to a silicon fist, and you will all beg your binary gods for mercy.

It is not just network traffic that you need to control, there are other factors like malware and other exploits that can effect a system that is out of date.

  • Thank you very much for your replies........... he will have to stay with Windows 98 for the time being, and I'll therefore pass on all of your advice.

    Thanks again.
