My Kupso instructor advises us not to go through dark alleyways or subways, no matter how much of a hurry we are in, he told us he had a falling out with his girlfriend about her wanting to take a shortcut and him refusing because it might not be safe.

He's 26 years old, a black belt, could probably defend himself against most attackers(defending against multiple attackers is part of his black belt grading), but his thinking is, is that it only takes one stab with a knife to kill someone, and it's simply not worth the risk.

I hear what you're saying about not letting the thugs win, but imho they can only 'win' if we put opportunity in their way and they are able to take advantage of it....

You don't have to be in a subway to get knifed or even mugged. In fact of all the people I can think of who have been mugged, had their purse/pocket picked, or got into a random fight, none of them were in subways or underpasses, most of them were in busy shopping or night club areas.
