Does your SURNAME make a difference to winning competitions ??

  • I agree it's down to luck, but I often wonder this - not in terms of what letter your surname begins with, but what your surname actually is. I myself have an ethnic or 'foreign' surname and sometimes wonder if I don't win comps because of it.

Taking a look at the ITV comps winners page, the number of people that have a foreign name are slim to none. There are maybe about 5 names on the This Morning list from the whole year's worth of winners - on the X Factor, Millionaire and Golden Balls lists, there are none.

Not that I'm bitter ;) but I just find it a bit hard to believe that people with foreign sounding names don't enter these comps at all and those that do are so unlucky as to never win...

I enter my boyfriend into the big cash comps as he has a very English name to see if he has any more luck - but having said that, he's yet to win anything lol! :rotfl:
  • Well I think i've done pretty well and I'm a WA so right at the end of the alphabet.

I do think that the reason I've done alright is the numbers game and nothing to do with my name. I enter loads and loads and so odds are in my favour that I will win something.

I've always thought it more likely that it's WHEN you enter that can make a difference.

It is almost usually a computer program that picks out the winner. I believe (and don't quote me on this) the computer randomly picks out 2-3 names for one prize. This is so that if the first name out doesn't have the correct answer then the next person in the list who does would win. Also if they cannot contact the first named winner then they can go to the next person. A lot of the winners are now picked out by ajudicators (sp) or have somebody independent who makes sure everything is above board. So really your surname doesn't make any difference same with if you enter the competition when it is first posted or the day it is due to end.

I was an 'A' & married to an 'S' - I've had equal luck with both & just think you have to be in it to win it!

I only enter comps I actually want to win - then I'm more excited when I do :D
