My boiler has packed up and been disconnected by british gas.
We now have no heating in the house!
Anyone know where the best place is to get a new boiler?
Thanks

Hi sorry to hear of your problems. It migth be worth posting on the In my home (DIY) board as the expert MSE plumbers will be able to advise you. I also had a similar problem in Nov and in the end got a local company to fit a new Alpha 18CDR for £1150. If you search the DIY board there is plenty more advice on this. Hope you get it sorted soon.0

Well you need to get a Corgi approved fitter to install it so i would get at least 3 quotes to replace it.
Here is a link to the Corgi site where you can get a list of approved fitters local to you.

Mp7125 mentioned Alpha boilers and these are a well respected cost effective make. Vaillant is also good but more expensive.0 -
My bro-in-law is Corgi registered and lives in South Wales. Even being in the trade, when doing jobs for family and friends he has always found it worthwhile to travel to the Tamworth (Midlands) branch of http://www.mrcentralheating.com/ to buy his boilers, radiators and copper pipe (he doesn't shop for anything online, but that's just him).
The How to Order page has branch details (line 'a'). They say "if you only need a combination boiler, prices start at only £369 inc VAT", ring your nearest branch and ask. Check how many radiators you need to heat first though, you may need a reasonably powerful boiler.
My search for their website actually turned up a Property Ladder makeover in Brighton! http://www.channel4.com/4homes/ontv/property-ladder/pl_brighton-5.html - I suppose you could do worse than ask their plumber for a quote for fitting, assuming that you live in Hove!Springsteen obsessive0 -
I am still awaiting a quote from a plumber since beforte Christmas. I got the feeling when they left that they didnt want the work, only want a new energy efficent boiler fitted.
I have to try someone else because we need it doing soon as we cant have any baths and heating is dodgy.0 -
Oh Cindy, what a terrible thing to happen, especially at this time of year.
I hope that you don't mind if I move your thead over to the In My Home board, where hopefully you will get some more help.

Was it British Gas that disconnected you or Southern Gas Networks or whatever incarnation of Transco you have?
I'll assume if you've been told your boiler is knackered or dangerous then it probably is but it's worth just posting here exactly what it (the boiler make and model) is and what it has been condemned for to get a few opinions on whether it actually is an 'ex-boiler'.
I wouldn't recommend that you go out and buy a boiler as under the Part L regulations it should be correctly sized for your property and there may be considerations of compatibility that need to be taken into account that you will need to be advised on.0 -
Not being a plumber myself, I did not know about the detail of the Part L regulations, even though I did recommend asking about a suitable boiler size for your house. In principle though (and I realise that time may be against you), a quote from a plumber for 'supply and fit' should tell you exactly which make and model you are getting, at what contribution to the total cost. In the spirit of this site it would make sense to see what price you could get the boiler for yourself and use this to negotiate, even if your plumber does end up getting the boiler for you.
And if you do find the boiler cheaper online, and they don't believe that you can get it for that price, their reaction when you provide the evidence may indicate something about their general attitude to the task. I would agree about getting at least 3 quotes too, and would ask around locally for recommendations. Good luck!Springsteen obsessive0 -
Unfortunately time is against us!
We've had 2 quotes so far. and the new boiler is being fited on monday at the princly sum of £1500!!!
No money saving here, but necessity comes first when it's this cold!
Thanks to everyone who tried to help.0 -
It's bitter here too. I hope 2006 gets better for you!Springsteen obsessive0
