thanks for that yenners,
Yo sushi seemed like a great price but the price is terribly pricey for sushi which is dirt cheap to make - obviously target yuppy Londoners but your voucher will enable me to give it a try one night.
for anyone else out there who lives in London and is dying for an affordable sushi restaurant then I would recommend Mitaso near Picadilly Circus - brilliant food at an incredibly affordable price in the heart of London - not the flashiest restaurant mind you - more like a quaint cafe.0 -
I got this offer today in my email but it doesn't apply to the Yo's in Selfridges - pants!!! The nearest one to me is in Birmingham Selfridges!!
Ah well, just have to go to the nice Japanese place in warwick instead. Set lunch for about £7.00Noli nothis permittere te terere

i know what you mean mattersdorff - when my husband and I go to yo sushi we easily spend up to £50 just for the two of us for dinner as it all adds up so quickly.
Thanks for the tip about mitaso - I have never heard of it but will definitely give it a tryNot buying clothes for a year - it's liberating!0 -

I also love Zipangu, 8 Little Newport Street and right near Leicester Square station.
This is also very basic - formica topped tables, etc, but does great sushi, sashimi plus various other Japanese classics and is really quite cheap! To infinity and beyond!0 -
I really fancy some sushi now..... none near me (that I know of)0

You could always try to make your own - even cheaper and good fun too!
Check out http://www.rain.org/~hutch/sushi.html for a guide to 'rolling your own'
If you go to the fiishmonger and tell him that you want extremely fresh fish for Sushi - he will be able to advise and supply.
I particularly like sashimi - no rice and so very good for low carb/calorie - I certainly recommend mackerel, salmon and tuna (which is so much nicer raw than it is cooked!)
I found these instructions that you could try for sashimi, or to prepare fish for sushi:
1. Buy a block of fresh maguro (tuna) and shape it into a rectangle. Slice it diagonally into smaller rectangular pieces.
2. Buy fresh and clear squid. Take out the guts, the head, and legs, and peel the skin. Cut the squid open into a flat piece and cut it to thirds vertically. Then, cut each sheet of squid into smaller rectangular pieces.
3. Buy extremely fresh mackerel. Take the guts out and fillet the fish. Soak the slices in rice wine vinegar for one hour. Wipe the fish well with a paper towel and peel the skin. Slice the fish into smaller pieces diagonally.
4. Buy fresh sea bream and scale the fish. Take the head and the guts out and fillet the fish. Remove the small bones. Salt over the skin and put in on cutting board. Pour boiling water over the fish and cool it in ice water immediately. Dry the fish with a paper towel and cut the fish slices into smaller pieces.
5. Buy fresh scallops and wash in salt water. Remove the white part on the side. Cut it in half horizontally and pour boiling water over the slices. Dry the slices with a paper towel.
6. Buy boiled octopus and wash well. Cut it into smaller rectangular pieces diagonally.
7. Buy middle sized shrimp. Wash shrimp and take the heads off. Put a bamboo skewer into shrimp from the head to the tail. Boil the shrimp in salted water in a couple minutes. Stop the heat and drain the shrimp. Cool the shrimp and remove the skewer and remove the shell off. Cut horizontally along the belly and flatten the shrimp. Remove the vein and wash the shrimp and dry with a paper towel.
8. Buy prepared eel and boil it in salted water for a couple minutes. Mix 1/5 cup of sugar, 1/3 cup of soysauce, and 3 tbsps of sake rice wine in a pan and simmer eel for 10 minutes. Cut the cooked eel into smaller rectangular pieces. To infinity and beyond!0 -
dunno wether I could face the guts and hassle of making it myself!0 -
thanks mike. my partner makes good sushi and your sugggestions will help us expand our horizons!! will try it out very soon.0

Good one there, thanks!
Sushi is expensive for a good reason - it has to be absolutely wriggling fresh, which costs money. None of your frozen stuff that died two years ago.
That said, I often eat raw fresh salmon (not tried any other fish) as sashimi, but I try to buy the absolutely top stuff, organic with a long sell-by date etc., to avoid a dodgy tummy. I've not had said dodgy tummy yet! You should be careful though when choosing - if the fish seems at all smeary (cf. showing sharp edges and very firm to the touch), avoid it - or cook it! I get my sake kicks for about £5 or less this way.0 -
great find cheers............shame the only one in West Yorkshire is in Harvey Nics in Leeds and of course we can't use it in there? or can we?Use your judgement, and above all, be honest with yourself.I walk with the world & the world walks with me!I don't make bad choices!!!
