DSL Tech question

Hi
Could I use DSL through a PBX or extension? I mean extension as in my phone number is an ext. number.

I currently have ADSL internet, but I'm on a compound overseas, and would like to use a different internet provider. Sadly the tech people only are interested in sales, not if it will work.

I know there are a lot of smart people on this site who may know if this is possible, and if so, how to set it up.

Thanks

  • No.

    Doesn't work.
  • But the old 56K modem will work so, ok for email and light surfing and slow downloads as you have loads of time to kill.........
  • Thanks for that, I thought I would be stuffed.
Oh well, back to the drawing board.

sorry you already have dsl?, so why should it not work?, is this on a different line?, why not see if you can change the provider on that line or get another line put in.
Also ask about in the area re wireless or cellular broadband.

  • Yes, I have ADSL but it's very poor and expensive. The contract for internet has been given to one company, I guess they can block other firms. I also have satellite broadband, again expensive and poor. Locally they advertise monthly DSL cards, which are much cheaper and faster. But I think the fact my phone is an extension means I can't get it working.
I'm not expert in this. Why can I use dial up, on an extension phone, but not DSL. The phone lines will clearly handle it, as I have a ADSL box and it sort of works.
  • The reason you can use dial up is because you have to dial a number to get connected, this does not cause any problems with a PBX system as it is you initiating the call. DSL is an always on connection, therefore it has to have a direct connection to the telephone socket in use, obviously this is not possible with a PBX system as all incoming calls go to the switchboard and are then routed to the relevant extension. If you already have DSL though you must have a telephone socket that is not on the PBX system, find out the telephone number of this extension and you will be able to use this for your new connection. If it is a BT line you can dial 17070 and this will give you the number, don't forget you will need to plug a DSL filter into the socket before plugging in your phone.
