Would love to go to the deep South in the States.
Anyone done an independant trip and can offer advice of where to stay/places to go etc?

Flew to Atlanta but only had a week so headed up to Chatanooga then Nashville, down to Jackson then Memphis, Birmingham, Montgomery then back to Atlanta and loved it. Every minute of it.

If we'd have had longer maybe would have gone into Louisiana and S Carolina. Wasn't able to go to New Orleans because they had all been evacuated due to hurricanes.

Not quite a deep South tour but:
We flew into New Orleans the day after Halloween (cheaper flight and the decorations were still up)

Stayed in NO for 3 nights through Priceline (Omni Royal Orleans Hotel) -for about £35 per night IIRC-and then stayed with relatives at Baton Rouge for another 3 nights.

Visited the usual sights in NO and some plantations (Oak Alley) Nottoway

and then drove up to Memphis just for an over night:eek:

Beale street was not our thing, but even though I am not an Elvis fan Graceland was impressive.

The Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel was humbling.

Tried to see the Memphis Belle but it is now in Dayton Ohio

Be aware that hurricane season is around Aug-Nov in the Deep South.
Further North the weather can be hot and humid June\July (I think!)

Parts of NO are still unrepaired but the French Quarter (the tourist bit) was relatively untouched and is OK (AFAIK).

We used an Open Jaw ticket for this trip. Flying into NO from LHR then eventually leaving JFK back to LHR
(caught a JetBlue flight NO to Washington then Amtrak to NYC).

remember to tan your neck before you go, or you'll stick out like a sore thumb.

never been that far south (exc FL) but the Carolinas are very nice.
Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?

    You don't say when?

If it's before April 1st stay south of I10 (Interstate10), Jacksonville to LA. Most of the Snowbirds and RVers, including us, stay south of this line to keep the warm sun on your back in winter.
