Have to live with folks to get debt free - anyone been there, done that?

I have been back home for two years after findign an ex had screwed me for a lot of cash.
I sold my house , paid off mortgage , then just told my parents. They said move in until yer sorted.
I am luck , as I have the whol of the third floor , that is a large office area a large bedroom and a reasonable bathroom.
My parents do travel a lot , so sometimes I get home from work and get a note saying "Gone to Paris for weekend" or similar.
The intrestign thing for me , despit my dad being a successfu; and now retired businessman , he insists I pay rent , and also checks every so often to make sure I am on top of paperwork for debtors.
It will be a long time until I am debt free , but at one point two years ago , Ihad nowhere amd 200 quid in my pocket and massive debt. I was delivering Pizzas for a living and was generally in a rut. I hit the bottle a little and drifted from friends spare room to friends spare room.
Dad gave me some good guidance and helped me do all the paperwork. He then took me to get a new suit and made me (at 34 years old) go to every agency I could find for work.
I felt awful , like a kid. But I now have very good job paying £25k a year , just 7 minutes from home , and last week , arrived at work on the bus to be called to the office and told I was promoted to Contract Manager and outside was a car for me.
Without mum and dad , I would probably have been in a gutter somewhere and struggling to work.
I guess my main advise is "There yer parents, They are your best friends , They are your best advisors"
Dad understood , after all , back in 1982 , we came within hours of being on the street when his business failed. He worked as a kitchen cleaner just to pay bills and bounced back. And I am doing the same.0 -
I think its great when our parents are there and able and willing to help out. One day they will be gone and they can never be replaced.
I wish I (London) could move closer to my parents (Scotland) so I could see them more than 3/4 times a year, but my situation prevents me :-(

I can understand your feelings, a while ago I felt I couldnt contemplate living with my Mum but now I am because I have decided to still keep my flat, that way I wont feel that it is forever. Plus this credit crunch affects her too so both of us having each other for a bit of company plus sharing bills is starting to make sense.
I would also be in the area where I grew up, there is other family member there too rather than here which is close to my ex husbands friends and family.
I currently live a distance away from her and I know she wont last forever. Why havent I dont it yet? I need to get a job of some sort there and that hasnt happened yet.
Oh and I am also a good bit older than you too.
Enjoy yourself, it is an opportunity to clear your debts, help your family, reconnect with the friends you grew up with, cut down the phone bill by actually speaking to them in person.0 -
I thought about it but decided against it. Dad wanted so much rent that I was better off on my own, he wouldn't have let me spend anything at all other than debts and going to the pub with him, and as he doesn't believe ME or bipolar exist it would have been tough for me. I can see why it would work for other people though, so well done on taking a big step which'll see your debt free date come closer!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

Hi,
Thank you all for the replies. I guess I am going to have to do it until I get straight. It's not the position I ever foresaw myself being in and it grates on my nerves every day. I guess that it motivation to never get in this position ever again and to get out of it as soon as possible.
