Have to live with folks to get debt free - anyone been there, done that?

Hi,

I thought I would post to see if I am an odd one out or I don't know.

I have recently moved 500 miles away from my flat. I am staying with my folks for a while until I get on my feet (got £21K of debt).

Just wondering if anyone has ever had to do this to help clear their debt? I was hoping it would be a year max, but now it's looking like 18 months to get about £19K done. I'm 31 and feel like an adult child and wondering why the heck I got myself into this situation! A bit down about it and desperate to get out of it now!

Just wondering if anyone else has been in the same boat and if anyone has any tips?

Thanks :o

  • Not quite the same but I stay with my folks when i am working(4 nights a week) as it is close to work and cheaper than renting a room somewhere.

I find it okay tbh. They treat me as an adult and i do as i please so it is more like i'm a lodger than there son living at home IYSWIM?

At the end of the day if it makes your debt free journey easier and quicker then why not IMO.

Am a bit embarrassed having a whole thread to myself on this shameful topic :o
  • Hi Chunkytfg,

    Thanks for the reply :o

I guess so, I'm out most of the time so I think it's just more the social stigma in my head that is getting to me.

It annoys me that I have a nice flat so far away and I can't scoop it up and take it away with me. Guess I'd still be financially in a bit of mess!

I just need to get it straight in my head. Getting over the having my own place is difficult, it's true about becoming so used to living on one's own about not wanting to adapt to other people's ways. I thought that was a lot of rubbish up until now!

    Thanks :o

The change from living on ones own to shring does take some getting used to. I'm lucky that when at home with my OH and her kids I dont feel the need to 'Me time' as i have all that while away on shift working.

Socially it doesnt bother me as tbh i dont have a social life away from my home so when i'm working i literally sleep work and watch telly in one big repetative cycle unitl it's time to go home.

I guess it works out quite well for you then. It's hard to have a social life during the week, I can just about manage the gym a few times a week. That's changing the channel on the remote control! :rotfl: Only jesting. :o

    Don't worry pinktwirl.
I still live with my folks. Could never afford to move out, then i started gambling and defiantely can't afford to move now.

I just stay out of the way and go on the computer. You will need to give them their own space as well as making sure you get yours. It's their house and their rules but i've never found that difficult to live with.

  • hey, im 23 just got married and had a baby and i am back living with my dad for the first time since i was 16 all because of debt!

we are planning on moving after xmas as we have been here 6 months now, id say we owe about 18,000 on cards and overdrafts plus another 10,000 to my day so thats 28,000 in all. i also have 23,000 of student loan debt too so witha 12 week old its going to be a while before i can work so just hubbys wage.

wont be debt free for long time.
good luck, i think youl find its really not as bad as what you feared but not as good as what you hoped if that makes sense?

    Hi,

I moved back home in August 2007. My bills have gone from 600 per month to 150, which is helping to pay my debts off each month, and have a life.

However, the downside is that I can't have friends over:rolleyes: , which we know is the cheaper option to entertaining.

But, one day hubby and I will be debt free and will be able to buy somewhere of our own.

    Take Care

I stay with OH's mum and family until we clear our feet enough to get our own place. Could just about manage it just now but deposit for renting and and unexpected bill would chuck us over the edge. So here it is... my sister is engaged (getting ,arried in march) and both her and her OH stay with my mum because they just cant afford not to
