Blue Screen.....

Hi there

Have today upgraded the RAM in my PC - it was previously running 2 x 256MB but would only take 1524MB max so took out one of the 256MB sticks and put in a 1GB stick instead. Does it matter which of the slots I put the new stick in? It's just that I've had 2 blue screens today. Or is it purely coincidence? Error message was PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA.

Thanks!

  • I'm not expert but I think that the 2 bits of RAM should be the same size (e.g 2 x 512mb)
  • Take out the second 256Mb stick, and place the 1Gb stick in the first slot.

Try running it like that for a day or two. If you get no errors check to see if the 1Gb and 256Mb sticks are the same speed. If they are then you can try the 256Mb stick in the second slot. If not, best to leave it out.

If you do get errors with just the 1Gb stick either your board needs a BIOS update to recognise the stick properly, or the stick is faulty.
  • How can I tell whether it's to do with the RAM or something else?

why should it be anything else?, start with the obvious

but really some memory modules are designed to run in pairs(DDR2), is there any colour coding on the RAM slots?, if so you will need to pair the colours, if so try and return the 1Gb stick and exchange it for 2x512mb of the same speed as your 2x256 modules

The error you give is usually associated with the memory, but not always.

If it wasn't happening before you put the memory in, there's a good chance it is memory related.

You don't say from where you got the memory.

IF from ebay, there are some dodgy RAM sellers out there.
    Move along, nothing to see.
  • Got the RAM from Play.com - ran the Crucial scanner and got what they recommended. Recently upgraded the RAM on our other PC in the same way and had no probs.

    No problem, was just checking.

I've used Play for RAM 3 or 4 times with no problem.

I seem to recall seeing the same
    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA
    with faulty RAM.

  • I asked about whether it was defo RAM related as looking in the Event Viewer has highlighted a number of other errors over the past month or so.

    For example:

Event ID: 7022 - The HP CUE DeviceDiscovery Service service hung on starting.

    Event Category: (102)
    Event ID: 1003
    Error code 0000000a, parameter1 00000055, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000001, parameter4 804dbc8e.

    Event ID: 7034
The KService service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 1 time(s).

    Event ID: 14103
    QoS [Adapter {F124C5C3-CC3F-4476-9109-DD27EBD59FCA}]:
The netcard driver failed the query for OID_GEN_LINK_SPEED.

Unlikely listings in the event log are related to your BSOD problems which are "untrapped" errors meaning they will not be listed in the event logs.
