AVG free problem

I have the latest version of avg free installed on my pc, and its saying that my anti virus and anti spyware is out of date, and that it was last updated on 15th September 2008.
I have tried updating manually from update manager, but keeps coming up with connection failed.
I have also uninstalled it and re-installed it, and still get the same messages.
Any ideas, or other free anti virus programmes?
