'BCA Auction View' versus 'Manheim Hammer Time'
I am looking to buy a Volvo XC90 petrol for < £10k and am willing to try the auction sites for an 3 year old ex-lease car if the time is right and nothing pops up before at dealer/private.
Wondered what peoples experience were of 'BCA Auction View' and 'Manheim hammer time' - Will the cars spec be listed to a fine detail and can you search for it - eg "executive" car spec or "DVD" options. Any feeling on which is easier to use? Email alerts?

Saw on Pistonheads today a auction report - XC90 07 plate, 10k, V8cost £47k, provisional £13000!!!!! Lost over 70% of its value in less than 2 years

cheers, bought a few cars over time. Figure i have a reasonable eye for what to look for. mate has a 56 plate D5 so will go over it so i know i am buying a straight one. Seing as the V8 is £5k behind book and dealers are selling them for £22k+, i hope to get something with volvo warranty for <£12k
The v8 is abit mad - t6 more sensible as a family car (esp as i have a decent 2 seater for speed). Head and heart eh?!0 -

blimey, these 4x4s are heavy aren't they?
I have an S80, it has the same engines I believe, 2.5T and 2.9 T6, I was going to say, the t6 is hardly sensible, but then I saw the 0-62, 9.3s. I have the 2.5T (not the T6) and it does 0-60 in 7.2s
Just to add, the fuel consumption on the 2.5T is shocking. While it will do 35mph on the motorway, the 2miles through to get to the gym is done at around 18mpg.
I can only imagine that a T6 in a XC90 is even worse, and the V8 worse still.0 -
fully aware of its weight/mpg shortcomings - i want a safe car for my family. We both work < 5 miles from home so daily mileage is not an issue. If we have to visit customer sites we have 2 other cars, both 30+mpg (and get 40ppm). 0-60 isnt a worry - have a 2 seater 300bhp beast for that!
If i can get a "exec" spec upto 3 year old XC90 that was near £40k+ new for £10-15k i will be very happy :j0 -
I have used the Manheim Hammer Time online facility before, I know of them as i live near one of the sites. Bascially you can search for vehicles and download catalogues unlimited within your duration subscription, all vehicles are described mostly with stuff like leather seats or DVD etc, also a great thing that it can do is email you any other veihcles that come in. Anyhow looks like you might of found you car, hope its fab! But if not its worth going to auction as you can save a lot of money but tip take someone who knows about cars I took my brother which helped me.0

So you're going to buy something with a far longer stopping distance than a saloon with a higher centre of gravity which makes it unstable on fast cornering and likely to roll over on sudden changes of direction such as those which you'd make in an emergency?
It's certainly an interesting way of looking at increasing safety. Not quite sure it's one I'd be taking.
The Euro nCap test videos show it no better than many saloons. Pedals moved and A pillar deformed in front impact test. However, you'd not have had the accident in the mid sized saloon as you'd have been able to stop quicker or steer out of the way without rolling it.
Only thing is you want to hope you don't hit a pedestrian as you're going to do them a lot of damage - the ncap report saying: bumper and leading bonnet edge are unforgiving.
