Liverpool - Manchester train season tickets

I've read some threads on here which say it can be cheaper to buy two separate season tickets rather than one to cover the whole route.
Between Manchester & Liverpool there are two different train routes (one via St Helens and the other via Warrington).
It is cheaper to buy season tickets as separate legs on the St Helens route, however as I use both routes I'm looking for a combination of tickets that covers either the Warrington or St Helens route without paying the full whack for a Liverpool-Manchester ticket.
Ideally I'd like to tie in bus travel in Liverpool (trio ticket might be a good option).
Have asked about this at the train stations but there are different restrictions for Merseyside and Manchester and they seem to only be able to give me answers for trains in their area, not the whole journey. Very frustrating!
Any tips/ideas appreciated!
