I have just remembered that when I transferred my money from Portman to Nationwide it all went over bar £1.29 which they said would come in the form of a cheque from HO - over one year later and I still haven't had the closing cheque.
Anyone else still waiting? (I can still see it online but can't access it).

Back in October 2007, I went in to the local Nationwide branch to close my Portman account. They said I could have a cheque for the contents of the account but they couldn't pay out the last £1.07 as the passbook would have to go to HQ to be formally closed there, and I'd receive a cheque for the £1.07 by post.
I remember thinking at the time what a farce it was, but I did receive that cheque about one month later. It looks like yours got overlooked.

I had a similar problem and wonder whether it was a Nationwide agency rather than a branch that you visited, as I understand that their agencies don't have the same access to the necessary systems to enable them to close accounts and include accrued interest.
This should show you which it was -

A branch should be able to sort it out for you.".....where it is corrupt, purge it....."0 -

No it was a big branch that I went into but they couldn't handle Portman accounts.
I went in again yesterday and complained and they still couldn't close it for me but after I made a bit of a fuss they decided they could transfer the money to my flex a/c if I would sign a form to say that I had lost my passbook! So in theory my £1.29 will be in my a/c on Monday - it will take 3 days to clear.0
