Hello
I currently have AVG free virus software and spyware doctor running on my pc. The AVG thing drives me mad by scanning for ages and slowing everything down. After reading a bit on this forum, I was thinking to actually fork out some money and get eset nod32, but then I saw their security home edition and I wondered, if I get that, is that all I need? So I could get rid of spyware doctor and AVG and just have one package doing it all?
I am not too technical and would rather pay to just get it sorted and not have to think about it again:o
This will also be to protect a laptop (not purchased yet!).
Thanks for any advice

If I was going to pay for a Security Suite, I would go for Kaspersky.
They both have trials, so you can try them for yourself before purchase.
ESET Smart Security
Kaspersky Internet Security 2009
Once you've decided, you can purchase the licence needed elsewhere.0 -
I'd personally go for separate peices of software e.g.
1. Anti-virus = Avira AntiVir
2. Anti-spyware = SuperAntiSpyware (rubbish name I know but one of the best in its field)
3. Anti-malware = Malwarebytes
4. Firewall = Zonealarm
But as Donnie has said if I were to go for a suite I'd choose either ESET Smart Security or Kaspersky Internet Security 20090 -

I use Eset Smart Security personally and its the best Security Package I have used, and I have used most of the main ones including Avg, Avast, Antivir, Norton, Mcafee etc.
Its very very light on resources and lighter than Kaspersky, and all the other packages I tested it against. Has hardly any impact on performance when running. Also excellent detection rates and no hassle, multiple daily updates.
As others have mentioned download and try the trial versions first to see if it meets your needs.0 -
I've tried all the free alternatives and most of the commercial ones. The one I have at the moment and stick with is Eset Smart Security (in fact at my last renewal I paid for a 3 year license I find it that much better than anything else I've tried). The only other thing I have is Malwarebyte's Antimalware which I run occasionally.
I even worked out once how much it cost me in terms of my time having more resource hungry and pestering free apps compared to Eset and even taking into account paying for Eset I worked out for me it was actually cheaper overall than using the free alternatives because of the extra small amount of time and resources they used."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

You can also use SuperAntiSpyware (which davidmt83 mentioned). I just use the free version as an on-demand scanner, however the paid for professional version is also conflict free with Eset SS (at least according to ESET user forums). There have been a number of reviews that have questioned the success of ESET malware/spyware protection but i've never had a problem with it (and I scan regularly with MBAM and SAS).Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Thank you very much for all those replies, really useful. I think I will go for it. I think as superscaper said, it will probably work out more as good value when you take my time into consideration. At the moment I seem to spend ages downloading different packages - then I forget what they are meant to do and if I am meant to remember to run things at certain times - I probably have the computer with the most security applications yet with the worst actual security!
I like the idea of the 6 months for free but the process looks very complicated, I think I am happy to pay to avoid it. Someone mentioned doing the free trial and then paying for the licence elsewhere - like where? And if I want the package for my as-yet-nonexistent laptop as well, do I do the free trial on my pc and then buy a licence that covers 2 computers, is that how it works?
Thank you again for your help

You have all left me and I still have questions!0

Whichever you go for, Eset or Kaspersky you will be well protected.
These two seem to do well in tests and both have their strengths and weaknesses.
The only advantage I see is that Kaspersky can be bought at discounted prices whereas I have never seen a special price for Eset.0 -

That's quite true. Eset tends to be around £40 for 1 license (I paid £39.99 direct from the Eset website). You can spend ages searching around the internet for vouchers and so on but very few of them seem to work. The cheapest i've found it is at Aria (however it is not much of a saving and probably more expensive when you pay for p&p).
As for the non-existent laptop. I've submitted a question on the Eset forum about this so i'll post back when someone replies.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0 -
Just found out about the licence. This is taken from the Eset website:
"The licence upgrade facility allows you to increase an existing ESET licence to cover additional computers, laptops, servers and mail server mailboxes. Upgrading a licence is quick and easy to do. The existing licence expiry will remain the same and the cost of any additional licences you purchase will be pro-rata'd across the remaining licence term.
Upon processing, you will be issued with a new licence to cover the total quantity."
Really hope this helps.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0
