I know plenty of people that did something similar to the above i.e. mew'd for a new kitchen/furniture/carpets/extension blah blah blah. I remember being invited to many house parties between 2002 - 2007 to celebrate a demonstration of false wealth.
OMG ain't that the truth. Thought it was just me. I much prefer the old days when you just got together to celebrate the fact that you could afford to get a round in;)0 -
well commented apon, shaggy.
the return to normality is just a few mortgage repayments away.miladdo0 -

I have been self-employed for the last 25 years, too. I started working from home, then expanded into an office. When I started, I had a separate part-time job for a while. It's possible to control the risk. Buying someone else's business with borrowed money is not controlling the risk.
One of my most successful clients started with a rented nissen hut in the middle of a field. It took him 6 months of pounding on doors to get his first order. Eventually, he expanded to occupy most of the local trading estate. It really is possible to get going in business without (literally) betting your house on it.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -
Talked to the business partner of a customer of mine I have known for nearly 30 years. He said today, although they are a very well established shop, they are not taking a wage.
It really is bad out there.
As Max Headroom commented...knowing the time to hold or fold..... it's a hard one.
From my gut, I know our premises should be morphed into a different type of business. I actually drafted one up in June 08, looked quite fun too and I was happy to go with it....then I did a small order for the e-tail site and the plan got shelved.
Lots of thinking and decisions have been made during the past month....I have decided to take the wise advice of my dear dad.
I got a commercial letting agent in today...we are going on the market as Glass tower LL has given us a solid indication of the rent increase he will agree to.
I have done my time with the general public for the moment.0 -

All of the above is true...we have known loads to get going with very little finance, us included.0 -
DON'T SPEND WHAT YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO PAY BACK .......
it's common sense but has become a concept in Britain that is almost crazy.
People in Britain seem to continual live on the never never, this is a concept that is non-sensical to me. In fact when you talk about paying cash for large items retailers ain't got the foggiest. I once got an import car, and when it arrived got a call saying it's in blah balh blah, how would you like to arrange finance. I said I'm paying with cash, they had no idea how to deal with it, and had to seek advice
, eventually paid with cheque.
I'm pretty fed up with everything being blamed on the 'credit crunch', if little Johnny down the road has flu its because of the credit crunch, when in reality most of the current fallout is because individuals have simply borrowed to much to pay back FULL STOP. :mad:0 -
Lol Kenny, same thing happened to me when I was buying my first PC, my son had been given a grant as he has a disability but they made the cheque out to me so I had to put it in my bank and draw out the cash. I then made my way to the computer shop and spent 20 minutes arguing with them that I did not want to take out finance (this was after I proffered my cash the first time, they told me to take finance and treat myself with the cash) and when I had finally convinced them, they then didn't know what to do with the money.
No little check box on their system for paying cash (the choices was finance, cheque or credit card - none of which I had at the time, not wanted) and no actual change anywhere on the premises (I didn't have the exact money, only notes) so in the end, every sales person had to scrabble in their pockets to give me change! We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

From your post I get the impression that your landlord is jacking up the rent. I had that last time round. The boom had ended (Thatches boom) resulting in, boring, houses over valued, but that was the excuse for the landlord to really ram it up us as we plunged, not only into a recession, but those loverly Tories then ramped up interest rates.
As for the general public.....don`t start me on that!0 -

Incredible, isn't it.
Most folk will have never seen more than a small change in the pockets, or a nights drinking money. No wonder the country is up !!!!!! creek without a paddling instrument.
Credit crunch..... bah humbug !
Xmas ..... bah humbug (even when there no credit crunch) !0
