I know plenty of people that did something similar to the above i.e. mew'd for a new kitchen/furniture/carpets/extension blah blah blah. I remember being invited to many house parties between 2002 - 2007 to celebrate a demonstration of false wealth.

Oddly enough I don't hear from those people anymore? Used to see them out and about on a Friday night and had to endure their tales of skiing holidays, weddings in the bahamas etc etc...but now they seem to 'stay in'!!

You had to "endure" their tales of enjoying themselves - but still went to their parties for 5 years !
Didn't you have anything better to do, or were you just waiting for the day when you could enjoy their misery ?

Friends? Where did I mention that they were friends? Unfortunatley they were friends of my ex-missus and the whole thing encouraged her to compete with them and then give me an ear-bashing about why I didn't have my own house with nice carpets, curtains etc etc...

So I should choose my girlfriends better...

In July of last year she tried to pursuade me to take out a £155k mortgage for a poxy house. Repayments were going to be over £1000 a month. At first I was open to the idea but I declined because I had a bad feeling about the whole thing. The house she was looking at was valued at £170k at the time. It's still up for sale and is sitting at £140k, however; it is empty! I'm so glad I didn't go through with it!

Can I ask why you're such an !!!!!!!!? I had no fricken choice in the matter and my conversation with my ex-partner after these stupid !!!!!!!! parties was centred around just how much debt these people were getting into! Yes I enjoyed them because why shouldn't I? However, it was plain as day that these people were mortgaging their lives away!

And no I'm not waiting for the day to enjoy their misery because I doubt they would throw a party for that!

So if you haven't got anything better to do yourself then please !!!! off and stop picking fights!

We're throwing a party to celebrate the completion of our new £20,000 bespoke wooden kitchen and my father's 90th birthday. As I prepare food for 35 guests on our range cooker and sunshine floods in through the French doors, I can't help feeling proud.

What I find quite amazing about the above statement is she seems to celebrating the completion of her kitchen before celebrating her father's 90th. Pity she's not proud of her father reaching 90.

It's a small glimpse of the greedy materialism that sums up why the country is in it's present state.

Maybe he died shortly before after seing the price of the kitchen.;)

I disagree that this is typical I dont know anyone who as done such a thing.
  • the story could possibly be a fabrication, the publisher being the good ol' DM.

or it could be entirely true.

either way, a juicy piece of voyeurism for the readership.

sadly, the DM doesn't disclose how much it paid the family to divulge their gross stupidity over a double-page spread (?) in a national daily. enough, I should imagine, for the family to overcome the indignity of publication.

peurile journalism at its best - we can always rely on the Daily Scare.

Also perhaps if she spent less time writting a diary when going belly up they could of used the creative energy to rescue the business.:D

I'd suffer immediate and long-term health problems at the cost of a 'bespoke' kitchen.

this example is probably untypical, but I'd certainly like to learn just how widespread and deep MEW is/goes.

I know it's not the full picture but this sort of borrowing/overspending is part of the reason for the credit crunch/recession. Yes, the banks/credit card companies were cynical and stupid to lend such money in the first place but people like this must accept some personal responsibility for getting all of us into this mess.
Our area has had loads of start ups during the past 5 years that have collapsed....instead of starting out small, or working in someone elses business for a time prior, they were able to raise the 80 odd thousand reqd...then discovered that their T/O wasn't enough to make the business profitable.
