Very useful - I was only doing 6 of them!"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."0

Same here!
Please can someone explain a couple of things on the list for me:
5. Install at least two anti-spyware apps. My top two recommended free apps are Ad-Aware and Microsoft AntiSpyware. Update definitions for both and turn on active protection in Microsoft AntiSpyware.
6. Install some free protective programs like SpywareBlaster and SpywareGuard from Javacool Software.
Am I right in thinking that the programs in 5 are reactive programs (i.e fix after you are infected) and 6 are preventive programs (stop infection in first place). If so...I thought MS AntiSpyware had realtime protection against Spyware?0 -
AdAware is a Scumware Ad removal tool after the fact of infection so is
Microsoft Antispayware, Adaware doesnt have real time protection where as
MS does, it asks for your permission for changes to certain registry entries or programs on your PC.. it auto updates the definitions unlike AdAware where you update manually.
Spyware blaster is a program that stops browser hijacking and active X plugins
a bit like IE but far more superior than MS's attempt, with IE you get the
drop down bar asking you to click an active X component, Its peventative software.
Host Files in simple terms lets you keep control of your browser and browsing experience so that you are not redirected away from sites you view Its preventative aswell.

webroot spysweeper is not free but is far superior to ad aware and ms anti spyware. You can download a trial version from webroots site. If you choose to activate it, spysweeper has real time protection.
The pro version of ad aware has real time protection.
One of the biggest hijackers Ive seen recently is the spyaxe trick. The only programme that I know that will remove it is this one available free from this site

Another good program to have in your arsenal is Hijack This. You need to know what you're looking for but this program will often allow you to incapacitate new scumware stuff before the major automated packages update to counter it. Very useful on PCs with a lot of rubbish already in place.
Of course the best way to reduce spyware to near-zero is to install Linux or the unofficial MacOS release to your PC, but this isn't always practical.0
