Capital One - "Your payment can't be processed at this time" Arrggh!

I switched to Capital One about six months again (from Morgan Stanley) for my cashback credit card, which I use for all my spending and pay off in full each month.

Two things are driving me up the wall, both stemming from the fact I pay online by Switch:

1) On the options for payment amount, it only has minimum payment or total current balance. Why is there no option for 'last statement amount'? By the time I pay there's spending on there from the new month and I have to manually check my statement and enter the full bill amount. There's no point paying off this month's spend yet. That's a minor irritant.

2) The last three months, it's taken me several attempts to pay. I put in the details, go through to the secure code thing that HSBC make me use, all seems fine, then I get 'Your payment can't be processed at this time - please try again later'. No explanation as to why!

This is driving me nuts. Tempted to switch in January (after receiving my cashback) although cashback card deals seem to be dying a death in the current climate. :( Probably because of people like me who use them and never pay interest. :D

  • Why don't you pay it directly from your Bank's online banking rather than on the CC website? Payment should go through no problems then.

A direct debit for the full amount would eliminate all your problems wouldn't it?

Oh you're all so logical. :p

I prefer not to use DD as I have far too many of them already and I don't trust myself to remember to cancel it when I cancel the card.

I should pay using HSBC internet banking, you're right. Just laziness so far in not setting Capital One up as a payee but I will do that next month. At first, paying by Switch just seemed easier.

You dont need to remember because the card is cancelled and should therefore have a constant £0 on it, meaning you'll never get a DD taken out. The DD will likely be cancelled by the credit card company too anyway.

Dont DD's expire after a certain amount of time if they're not used?

be careful!!! this happened to hundreds of us a couple of months ago and the payments actually did go out of our banks causing overdrafts and misery it took just under a month to get duplicate payments returned and it cost them a lot in compensation too!!! check your bank aaccount make sure it hasnt been debited.

The 'guidance' is 13 months/400 days, but it depends on individual institutions' policies.

How long would it take to show on our Bank statement ? I've just been to Capital One website and tried to pay and got the "we can't process your transaction at this time" message. It worked fine yesterday evening. Then again, I may have mis-hit the last letter of the Barclays security bit, I'm not entirely sure.

I paid mine on the website yesterday in the end (using HSBC maestro card) - it went out of my HSBC account today.

If you got that message and it's not on your Capital One payments posted list it probably didn't go through, but I'd give it 3 or 4 business days to go through just in case. After that time (if it's not too late to make payment) try again.

Cheers Sarah. I checked this morning and nothing was showing on capital one or my bank account so Im presuming it hasn't gone through. I'll leave it till tuesday, just to be on safe side.
