Credit Rating - Best ways to improve this?

Hi,

I have recently tried to get a mortgage with no luck because of my credit rating.

I signed up to Experian and paid my fiver to see my score and it was worse than I thought although most of the problems were in 2005 when I lost my job and missed a few payments.

I have heard there is a way to clear these off my account?

I have paid off my Credit Card in full and plan to use say £10 - £20 of this every month and paying off the card in full at the end of the month to get my score higher.

Does anybody else have any tricks or ways to get things off my credit score from years ago?
